The New 2015 Ford Mustang Gets the Usual First-Year Sales Boost - Automobile

They’re cars we want to own, not vehicles we need to own, and these days their natural sales level is closer to what it was in 2014 than what it is, so far, in 2015. Hardcore enthusiasts will buy the V-8 models through thick and thin, but the vast... They’re not brand-loyal the way the V-8 muscle car buyers are -- they’re buying ponycars, and they’ll choose styling over brand, which explains how the Chevrolet Camaro was able to grab the sales crown from 2010 to 2014. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to disparage the new Mustang, the old Mustang, or any of its past and present competitors (well, OK, I’m happy to disparage the late-’90s GM F-Bodies). Since the debut of the original Ford Mustang (and probably much earlier), sporty two-door models with relatively tight interiors sell well in the first year or two, then sales trail off until an enticing new model comes along. The new Ford Mustang is, I’d argue, the best new design from the brand in at least a decade (not counting concepts). Ford sold 68,290 in the first six months of this year, up 54. 4 percent over the 44,231 sold in the first-half of 2014, when the company was winding down production to clear the lots for the new model. The new Ford Mustang’s smart early TV commercials certainly contributed to this year’s success. Source: www.automobilemag.com
