The US car industry is booming once more, and here in Detroit, the gloom - and then brittle optimism - that once permeated North America's biggest car show has faded into a more relaxed confidence. Sales at the so-called Detroit big three - that's Ford, General Motors and Chrysler (now owned by the Italian firm Fiat) - have rebounded as the US economy has recovered, and 2015 looks to be even better. But with opportunity has once more come, if not hubris, than at least the possibility of it. Plunging oil prices have made US car buyers flock once more to large trucks and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) - and away from the hybrid and electrical... "Looking at history, you see that when gas prices have gone up historically that's really hurt the car industry, particularly the American car industry," says University of Michigan professor Don Grimes. "[The big three] have all suffered disproportionately during high prices and have benefitted disproportionately from lower gas prices. US car makers were forced to recall a record number of cars in 2014, as an ignition switch scandal at General Motors put a renewed focus on safety. In the wake of revelations that GM had ignored a series of fatal accidents relating to problems with ignition switches in its vehicles, the car maker was forced to recall 2. 6m cars in February 2014. But as a series of mistakes by GM's engineers... The total number of recalls ended up being significantly higher than the number of cars GM sold during the year. "Certainly no-one expected [2014] to unfold the way it did - it was a tragedy," said Ms Barra, as the total number of deaths linked to the faulty ignition switches grew to 42 and the cost to GM ballooned to $400m (£256m), including a $35m fine... Honda, BMW and others were all forced to issue recalls for cars containing the airbags. So now, with nearly 60m cars in the US recalled - that's one out of every five cars on the road today - all eyes in Detroit are not just on the glitzy new launches, but on the lessons learned from previous safety issues. Custom Trucks It can be difficult to identify the model year of custom trucks, because elements have often been changed. 1951-1952 F-1 Trucks. Grille and fender fronts were changed significantly in '51 and '52. Headlights were set further apart and the grille opening was extended to nearly the full width of the front. V-8 equipped pickups sported an emblem just below the hood. Base model trucks had a spear-like molding on the hood -- stamped FORD at one end and F-1 at the other. Five Star trim added a bullet-shaped piece at the front of the molding and additional trim above and below it. The cowl's F-1 emblem was dropped in '52, replaced by a round emblem on the side of the hood. Source: trucks.about.com

• 1952 Ford F100 Pickup Truck for Sale: St. Louis, Missouri

  This 1952 F100 pickup was recently frame off restored, and is finished in a beautiful new coat of Black Cherry paint. The frame has been media blasted and finished in a coat of high gloss and the undercarriage is beautifully detailed. All panels were stripped down to bare metal and and the new paint really pops. During the day it has a slight metallic finish and at night, it almost looks black. The builder of this truck nailed the stance with a set of 20" Billet Specialties rims all the way around. They fit perfectly inside the wheel wells and really set the truck off. These bodies take nicely to a lowered look and this truck is no exception. The front bumper and lower and body panels really hug the road. All of the trim and glass on the truck are new and really shine. The bed is new oak with a glossy polyurethane finish and all of the bed trim is stainless. The front and rear fenders on the truck are the original steel ones unlike the fiberglass replacements we see on many Ford F100s.

  The motor is a freshly built and strong running Chevy 350 hooked up to a nice little Turbo 350 transmission. The engine falls into a nice idle after start up and has a very mild cam. Around town it's the perfect cruiser offering up plenty of pep and running nice and cool with its aluminum radiator. The 350 has a Weber carb with electric choke, electronic ignition and a polished intake, exhaust, and alternator. The valve covers and air cleaner are matching billet pieces with the classic groove design. The completely rebuilt suspension is extremely smooth around town and the front disc brakes are a nice addition to the package. The steering is precise thanks to a rack and pinion unit and the rear end offers a nice setup for street and highway use.

  The interior is simple, clean and lays out the driver's needs in a straightforward manner. The gauges are VDO units and accurately display the readings. To the right of the gauges, a modern JVC head unit sits where the original stereo would have been, and don't worry, it offers more than just AM radio. Next to the stereo, the climate controls for the cab offer up ice-cold A/C or heat at your command. All of the paneling is custom and there are speakers housed in the kick panels. The windows are power and the modern switches are fit to the door panels. The modern bench seat is comfortable for long drives and is adjustable back and forth in the cabin.
