Event to honor lives lost to drug overdose to be held at Bishop Park - Southgate News Herald

The mother of a 24-year-old Southgate man who recently lost his life to drug abuse is collaborating in an event to honor the memory of others who have been impacted by drug overdoses. 31, people from all over the world will be participating in International Overdose Awareness Day, an event held on the same day each year. Karen Kowalik said her son, Mark Kowalik, fought addiction for seven years until he lost his battle April 6 after an overdose while in Chicago. She said her son’s habits began with using marijuana and prescription drugs, and quickly developed into a heroin addiction. Kowalik said she is encouraging others who have been impacted by addiction or a drug overdose, whether if it themselves or someone they know, to come to the event to learn more. Plans for the event are still in progress, but Kowalik said she plans on obtaining speakers as well as holding a special candlelight vigil in memory of those who lost their lives.
