Mother, infant killed in Borrego Springs collision - The San Diego Union-Tribune

A woman and her infant son died when she pulled a U-turn into the path of a pickup and collided in Borrego Springs Thursday, authorities said. The driver was identified by the county Medical Examiner's Office as Erendyra Fierro, 27, of Borrego Springs and her nearly 2-month-old son, Javier Salazar. Another passenger in the car and the other driver also were injured, the California Highway Patrol said. CHP Officer Kevin Pearlstein said she came to a stop on the shoulder, then started to make a U-turn without realizing a Dodge Ram pickup was approaching. The pickup driver, a 60-year-old Borrego Springs man, was going the speed limit but couldn't stop in time to avoid smashing into the driver's side of the Volkswagen. The infant had been properly secured in a rear-facing car seat behind the driver, Pearlstein said. A front seat passenger, a 51-year-old Borrego Springs woman, suffered moderate injuries.
