Inmate steals truck, escapes from work site in Lawrence Co. - WSMV Nashville

Deputies said Jason Kirk, 35, walked off a work-release site and stole an employee's pickup truck. "I've been here soon will be five years and that's the first we've had anything like that," Lawrence County Sheriff Jerry Brown said. Brown said on any given day, 12 to 15 workers report to the county landfill as part of a work-release program. Thomas Rosson, an employee of the landfill, was reportedly supervising the group, Brown said. It took at least 30 minutes before anyone realized Kirk had walked off the job and driven away in a truck belonging to a county employee. The sheriff said Kirk was able to drive away because an employee had left the keys in the vehicle. Police said Kirk was incarcerated for various crimes, including theft, evading arrest, reckless endangerment and a parole violation. Records show Kirk will become eligible for parole in 2020. . A state website also indicates Kirk was scheduled for a parole hearing in May 2015. The status was listed as "revoked," which means Kirk was re-incarcerated. Brown described Kirk as a non-violent prisoner who had never given authorities trouble before. Several weeks earlier, the state prisoner had transferred from Chester County to Lawrence County.
