The purge valve
on your fuel vapor canister (or charcoal canister) exists to keep fuel
vapors from your fuel tank escaping into the atmosphere.
It does this by trapping them in the fuel vapor (or charcoal) canister
and then slowly putting them into the engine during certain operating
conditions to be burned with the rest of the fuel. This not only helps
the environment but also your mileage as this fuel vapor is burned
instead of being lost. The purge valve is an electronically operated
solenoid that over time can go out which can cause the check engine
light to come on if your car's computer is seeing it not releasing when
it's supposed to or vice versa. In addition it can cause a vacuum leak
which can cause your engine to run badly and also affect your fuel
mileage. The good news is it's an inexpensive part in OEM form and easy
to replace! This brand new purge valve is made by Bosch who is the OEM
for this part so, unlike the cheapie reproductions all over ebay, this
part will last for many years like your original one did.
