2009 Audi S5 - an AutoWeek Performance Review - AutoWeek

SENIOR EDITOR FOR NEWS BOB GRITZINGER: Like the new Mercedes-Benz E-class coupe, I'm not sure where coupes like this fit in today's marketplace, except as niche vehicles for people who can afford the luxury of only needing two doors and not much... For those who can, I'd say this S5 is the pick of the litter right now, with sharp lines, velvety power, capable handling and the oft-acclaimed Audi interior refinement. Add all-wheel drive, and this rock-steady six-speed manual gearbox and my guess is it will be the Audi S5 owner who'll be snickering at the snowbanks when everyone else has had to put their play toys away for the winter. EDITOR WES RAYNAL: This is a very nice car. The car is gorgeous to look at and has plenty of punch and it is put to the ground smoothly with quattro and the six-speed manual. I liked the steering in this car and I normally don't say that about Audis, but this was communicative and properly weighted to my tastes. It's also among the most well planted cars I can think of and is silky smooth to travel long distances. The seats are among the most comfortable I can think of. All the bits inside look and feel like fairly high quality. I've seen better Audi interiors, but this one isn't bad. I also think it's a crime that Audi doesn't bring the S4 wagon stateside.
