Nothing can keep Lampert off the race track - The Caledonia Argus (subscription)

Three months ago, Jake Lampert was lying in a hospital bed, about to undergo a six hour biopsy to remove melanoma from behind his right ear. There was no timetable for his return, but when Lampert asked his doctor how soon he could race again, the doctor told him it could be well past August until he got back on the racetrack. The first scare for Lampert happened a week before Easter of 2013, when he had a tumor removed from behind his right ear. Scans showed no lingering problems, and he was cleared to go. But after he noticed a lump behind the same ear about two years later, he contacted the same surgeon, and was informed that the scans this time around showed stage 3 melanoma. Fast-forward to the end of June 2015, a month after the biopsy that saw the 37 year old husband and father of two in a hospital bed for four days, and he was already back to living as close to a normal life as he can, but two months ahead of... Lampert’s face still feels numb from the expected nerve damage and his stomach is healing from the eight-inch gash made to patch up the rest of the side of his face. But those minor cosmetic issues don’t seem to stop Lampert from hopping back into his black and orange Buick Regal at the racetrack. Lampert’s obsession with cars traces back before he even graduated from Caledonia High in 1996.
