GM Recalls 50000 Chevrolet Volts to Fix Idling “Issue,” Stop-Sales 2015 Chevy ... - Car and Driver (blog)

As a safety precaution, and due to two accounts of carbon-monoxide poisoning from vehicles left running in owner garages, GM will program the car’s software to switch off the ignition if the owner exits the car without hitting the “power” button. The problem lies with people who somehow forget their Volts have gasoline engines and presume the car is off, all while ignoring the warning chimes telling them otherwise. When a Volt is in electric mode and left running, the power-generating engine will eventually start once the battery charge reaches a certain level of depletion, regardless of where the car is parked. Dealers, instructed by GM to not sell any new or used Volts in stock until the fix is ready, will program in an undisclosed time limit for Volts left idling, after which point the cars will shut themselves down.
