Maybe a mentor will walk into his life and lead him to the right path - one that doesn't just write him off as "thug" and want to lock him away for a long time (and god knows then he would be a hardened criminal. However that should come with a caveat that if he commits more violent crime then he gets a very long sentence. He is a criminal and a liberal soft-hearted judge decides to give him a pass.
