Sams was driving a stolen 1999 Chevrolet S-10 when an officer first turned on his overhead lights near the intersection of Montgomery and Pfeiffer roads at 10:45 a. m. , court records state. The officer wrote in an affidavit that he exited his cruiser with his weapon drawn, shouting for Sams to get out of the car. Instead of getting out, Sams fled, police said. The officer said he was struck by the side of Sams' car as he drove away. Sams eventually hit a stop stick placed near the Stewart Road exit and crashed the car into the center divider.
