Car hits train in Wellington Twp.; 18-year-old driver killed - Chronicle-Telegram

Nicholas Roberts, of 123 Middle St. , was southbound on Pitts when he struck one of the cars of a westbound CSX train, said Trooper Clayton Grubb of the Ohio Highway Patrol Elyria post. Grubb said the crossing gates — one of which was bent from being struck by the 2000 Chevrolet Malibu that Roberts was driving — were down and the crossing lights were flashing when the crash occurred. No one was hurt on the train, which didn’t stop after the crash, said Fire Chief Michael Wetherbee. He said the engineer didn’t realize the train had been struck, and the wreck was called in by personnel from another train who saw the destroyed Malibu. The impact of the crash knocked the Malibu about 40 yards west of the crossing and Wetherbee said it rolled over multiple times. Roberts, who died at the scene, was thrown about 10 yards west of where the Malibu came to rest. She said there was a conductor and engineer on board the train, which had three locomotives and 34 cars. Source: chronicle.northcoastnow.com
