Weslaco banks on fireworks to lure more spectators to Fourth of July bash - Monitor

By popular demand and in an effort to attract local residents from the Mid-Valley who’d otherwise make the long trek to the Island on Independence Day, Weslaco’s celebration will include a $12,000 fireworks display in its patriotic shindig. “That’s what I’m hoping for,” said Parks and Recreation Director David Arce, who’s spearheading the event’s organization efforts, on convincing Mid-Valley citizens to opt for Weslaco’s Fourth festivities. Held at the Mayor Pablo G. Peña City Park on Airport Drive in Weslaco, Saturday’s event will feature collaborative efforts from the city, the Weslaco Economic Development Corp. and Dice Productions in conjunction with the monthly Alfresco Weslaco: Music and Art on the Street as well as the Movies at the Park summer event — the latter of which will present a showing of "Transformers: Age of Extinction" at 8 p. m.
