2 killed, 3 hurt in Franklin wreck involving unlicensed teen - Asheville Citizen-Times

Caleb Sloope, 16, the driver of a 1996 Chevrolet van, was transported to Mission Hospital, where he died. Another passenger, Cameron Sloope, 17 — who is Caleb Sloope’s sister and the daughter of Joy Sloope — was transported to Mission Hospital. The van collided with a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Herwart Hugel, 86, Rhodes said. Hugel and his wife, Ingrid Hugel, 80, a passenger in the Suburban, also were transported to Mission Hospital. Herwart Hugel and Ingrid Hugel both were in stable condition Thursday at Mission, a hospital spokeswoman said. The accident happened when Caleb Sloope, driving west on U. S. 64, ran off the right side of the road, Rhodes said. The Hugels’ eastbound Suburban struck the van after it rolled, Rhodes said. Alcohol was not a factor, but investigators estimated Sloope was driving 10-15 mph over the 55 mph speed limit, Rhodes said. Source: www.citizen-times.com
