Police say mental patient stole car - Marshfield News-Herald

The Norwood Health Center patient who briefly escaped earlier this week has a history of violent behavior and crashed a stolen car that initially contained a 12-year-old girl, according to court records. Spindler was detained Monday evening after losing control of the car in a police chase in Jackson County. 24, an alarm sounded at Norwood shortly after staff performed routine checks to ensure Spindler was in his room. When the alarm went off, staff went back to his room and saw that his window “had been physically ripped from the wall,” court records say. Spindler found an unlocked Chevrolet Impala with its engine running at a nearby business. Spindler told her to get out of the car and after she did, he drove off, according to a statement the girl gave police. Police there received a report that a man matching Spindler’s description stole a 12-pack of Budweiser beer, cigarettes and a lighter from a gas station. A store clerk told police the man matching Spindler’s description put a $1 bill on the counter “and made a comment about the government owing him money,” according to a police report. Around 4:48 p. m. , a Jackson County sheriff’s deputy drove past Spindler, who was heading west on Highway 54 in the town of Brockway. Source: www.marshfieldnewsherald.com
