IndyCar, NASCAR legends enjoy Woodward Cruise Thursday - Detroit Free Press

And in the lead, driving the official 1972 Hurst Oldsmobile 442 Indy 500 pace car, was Birmingham race team owner and racing mogul Roger Penske. Penske led a caravan of 16 official Indy pace cars from the A. J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home parking lot next door to the Art Van Furniture store on Woodward in Royal Oak, where Team Penske entertained drivers and employees in a big tent. Penske headed north on Woodward to Pontiac, the display of pace cars behind him commemorating his team's record 16 Indy 500 victories. At the wheel were some of Penske's greatest drivers, including four-time 500 winners Rick Mears and Al Unser, and three-time winners Helio Castroneves and Bobby Unser. The elite caravan included Al Unser Jr. , Gil de Ferran, Sam Hornish Jr. , Simon Pagenaud and current Penske NASCAR drivers Brad Keselowski (Rochester Hills), Joey Logano, Ryan Blaney and 1989 Winston Cup champ Rusty Wallace. "I guess this is my real home track," said Penske on his return to Team Penske's temporary headquarters on Woodward, just south of 14 Mile. Frenchman Pagenaud drove the 2002 Chevy Corvette pace car, and he laid rubber as he exited the Desmond & Sons parking lot. "It is just incredible to be here at the Dream Cruise and to take part in this Team Penske event," said Pagenaud, who drives a Dallara/Chevy for Penske in the Verizon IndyCar Series.
