15th Relay For Life set for Saturday - Lockport Union-Sun & Journal

The American Cancer Society event that honors those fighting cancer, remembers those lost to the disease and takes up the fight is a roller coaster of emotions. Many in attendance this weekend will have been with the local Relay since its beginning in Barker in 2001, veterans in the war against the insidious disease that knows no boundaries. Many others will be there for the first time, finding out what thousands locally already know: Relay is the best family party around. Beginning at 2 p. m. Saturday, the Relay village of team tents will be set up on the field within the track. Individual teams will offer games, activities, crafts, raffles and more at their sites, while members take turns walking the track in a continuous relay that spans the night. It is the mantra of Relayers everywhere, “Cancer never sleeps, and neither will we. ”. One of the highlights is a giant basket auction, already stocked with well over 300 baskets and prizes. Tickets go on sale at 2 p. m. and the winners are drawn silently during the public closing ceremony at 10 p. m. Winning numbers are posted after the ceremony for those at the track, but winners need not be present to claim prizes. The official opening ceremonies begin at 6 p. m. Honorary Survivors Kerriann Kerr and Norbert Rug will share their stories and lead the first lap of survivors, all honored guests who inspire and electrify the cheering crowds as they walk the track.
