Speed thrills first-time, longtime drivers at Pikes Peak Airstrip Attack - Colorado Springs Gazette

Racing at 155-215 mph had grown men grinning like kids during the first day of the Pikes Peak Airstrip Attack. "It's insane," said first-time driver Doug Roberts of Thornton. It was no less a good time for the everyday driver, those that drive cars that are still street legal, and especially for the first-time racers taking advantage of the new, cheaper pro-am division. "It's a lot of fun," said first-time driver Erron Spalsbury of Superior. Some races have the fans cordoned off but here you can walk along and meet the drivers and check out their vehicles and talk about their engine and ask questions. It's a great chance for a guy like him who has put months or work into his 1992 Dodge Stealth to show off his work. "Oh yeah," said Thornton driver Jeremy Hepburn, who raced in the inaugural Pikes Peak Speedweek event last summer. Sometimes it is just about the traditional rivalry between Fords and Chevys and the possibly jealousy some drivers have toward the high-end and ultra-expensive GTRs, Porsches and Lamborghinis. "I mostly have it to get the other drivers talking," he said. Source: gazette.com
