Coming her way on Interstate 27 in Amarillo as she headed north Sunday morning were the headlights of what she later would learn was a 2009 Scion driven by 43-year-old Andrew Bradford Kinkead. “I didn’t know what to do,” said Ashleigh, 18, a proud graduate of Caprock High School less than two weeks ago. She was in the driver’s seat of a 2008 Dodge Nitro, the car her mom, Lisa, had given her to drive during high school. In the car with Ashleigh were three of her best “guy friends”: Javion Estrada, Austin Cruz-Riley and Jordan Atkinson. The trio of 17-year-olds are star senior athletes at Caprock High excelling in football, basketball and track. Also in the car was Ashleigh’s best friend in the world, 18-year-old Esme Ruiz. Ashleigh and Esme were going to be roommates in college at West Texas A&M University before Ashleigh decided to instead attend the University of North Texas. The five had traveled to Lubbock on Saturday night to support Caprock football players in the 2015 ASCO all-star game at PlainsCapital Park-Lowrey Field in Lubbock. The game kicked off at 7 p. m. , and afterward the five friends decided to eat before traveling back to Amarillo. Lisa Guerrero also attended the game and headed back to Amarillo about 45 minutes ahead of her daughter. Ashleigh was driving with her seat belt on, and Jordan was sitting in the passenger seat with a seat belt on. In the middle back seat were Javion and Esme, not wearing seat belts.
