The traffic signal that was knocked over was not up to city code, but it had been grandfathered in, as it was installed before the codes changed, said Peter Steele of the city's Public Information Office. But replacing it would require bringing all of the traffic lights at that intersection up to code, which requires larger, more expensive traffic lights than the old ones at the intersection, he said.
