City to fix pooling water near College and Walnut - Freemansd

The city of Freeman is moving forward with a drainage improvement project in an area long susceptible to pooling water after heavy rains. The project is designed to help water flow south on Walnut Street in the area north of College Street and south of the emergency entrance at Freeman Regional Health Services. The project, which will be done by city workers, includes installing a spillway crossing Walnut about 75 feet north of College and improvements on the west side of Walnut. A letter sent to residents in the area notes the west side of the street will be excavated 6 to 9 inches, graded to a consistent grade and then graveled as a permanent parking area. Driveway entrances along the west side of the street will be removed and replaced with concrete to allow water to flow to the south. That’s important, said Freeman Mayor Sam Sorensen, because over the years, people have filled in the areas along their streets, contributing to the problem with poor drainage. Additional improvements, including a new street surface to provide better drainage and smoother travel will be included in the 2016 budget, city officials said. Several residents in the area attended Monday’s meeting including Dan Waldhauser, who lives at 821 S. Walnut on the west side of the street and whose property will be affected.
