Volunteers painted playground equipment and 7-foot-high wooden fences, prodded weeds out of soil and pushed wheelbarrows full of mulch. More than 1,000 people from corporations, schools and labor unions pitched in Thursday for the 23rd annual United Way Day of Caring. The Day of Caring began in 1992. Several women from Steel Dynamics, part of a crew of 22 people, applied colors such as blue and yellow to outdoor play equipment at Lindley Elementary School on Ardmore Avenue. About 40 feet away, classic rock pumped from a black Dodge Ram, the beats of Bob Seger and Queen thoughtfully provided by Rick Poinsatte, Steel Dynamics’ vice president and treasurer, who was elsewhere, pushing a wheelbarrow full of brown mulch. The summer project suggested by Tricia Meyers, the company’s corporate accountant, also makes for good team building, said Sarah Lawson, senior financial analyst who has participated in the Day of Caring six times.
