It's now game-on in the midsize truck segment. Toyota's Tacoma had led the segment until General Motors reintroduced its Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon last year. Toyota will soon respond with an all-new Tacoma for 2016. We recently got a chance to drive a '14 Tacoma. Appearance: It now looks a bit stale compared to the new midsize pickups we mentioned from GM or even its big sibling, the Toyota Tundra. (Sadly, not available for 2015. ) Our Tacoma "Access Cab" came in the PreRunner trim, and had the TRD Sport Extra Value Package ($3,575). With that, you get TRD graphics, 17-inch alloy wheels, a hood scoop and touches such as body-color trim... The truck also sits high with a 9. 3-inch ground clearance. The TRD Sport package also includes a sport suspension with Bilstein shocks for those who want to leave the pavement. The estimated MPG is 17/26, which isn't as good as some full-size trucks. Interior: It's fairly utilitarian, save for some upgrades that are part of the Extra Value Package. As part of the option package, our truck had sliding rear-glass window, and a backup camera. Continuing its momentum as America's most popular compact pickup truck, Toyota refines its offerings for the 2015 Tacoma. For 2015, Tacoma is now exclusively available in two cab types: Access Cab, and the four-door Double Cab. The rear doors on Access Cab models open to 80 degrees to give passengers easy ingress and egress. Double Cab models offer a roof rack system with crossbars that deploy from the roof rails. Power for the Tacoma is generated by one of two engines: a 2. 7L four-cylinder and a 4. 0L V6. In both engines, variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) provides strong low-end and midrange torque. Four-cylinder models offer a choice between a five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic transmission. For 2015, Toyota adds a new TRD Pro Series for Tacoma that's off-road ready and willing. Replacing the limited-edition Tacoma Baja Series that was offered for 2014, the 2015 Tacoma TRD Pro Series adopts much of that model's beefed-up body and chassis features, including 16-inch beadlock style TRD alloy wheels with BF Goodrich...
