Therefore, it’s easy to think that because of our vibrant truck culture, we’d be privy to all sorts of pickups from around the world. It’s not turning into a Tundra Junior, and because of its popularity in densely populated cities like Bangkok, it’s had to remain maneuverable and car-like in its reflexes. There’s a lot riding on Toyota’s Hilux — Top Gear infamously tried to kill one by setting it on fire, drowning it in ocean water, and placing it atop a building that was then demolished, and it still started. Sadly, we’ll probably never see the Hilux. Or the new Ford Ranger, or the slew of small, rough-and-tumble pickups that are available in most countries around the world except ours. Leaked images have prematurely revealed the all-new 2016 Toyota Hilux, a rugged Tacoma-sized pickup truck sold in well over 100 countries worldwide. Entirely new from A to Z, the Hilux gets a much more modern look that falls in line with Toyota’s latest design language. The leaked images show the Hilux crew cab, but the lineup will also include single and extended cab models. Inside, the Hilux follows the truck industry’s shift towards more car-like dashboards. The instrument cluster boasts a configurable TFT screen, the steering is commanded through an ergonomic three-spoke multi-function wheel and the truck can be ordered with a large touch screen that runs the latest generation of Toyota’s... WorldCarFans reports the 2016 Hilux will be offered with at least three turbodiesel engines. The entry-level mill will be a 2. 4-liter four-cylinder available with either 148 or 164 ponies, while buyers after more grunt will be able to order the truck with a 2. 8-liter oil-burner tuned to churn out 174 horsepower and gobs of torque. Car meets and car shows have been around since the term ‘automotive enthusiast’ was first coined. What is there to hate about a gathering of people in a parking lot with tastefully modified cars. From the late-night meets at Krispy Kreme, to the early-morning Cars & Coffee gatherings – we’ve been to them all. The thing about many car meets though, is that most of the time they’re restricted to a certain group of cars (the bigger ones at least). Cars & Coffee for example only really consists of cars that fit into the following categories: expensive, unique, and old. The chances of seeing a Nissan 370Z or a Hyundai Genesis at one of these events is close to nil – unless they’re very uniquely modified. The chance of you seeing a Mustang GT350 at an import meet is also the same. What I’m trying to get at here, is that we don’t have car meets that cater to all auto enthusiasts. Or at least we didn’t until Nitto Tire stepped in and created the Auto Enthusiast Day – a gathering of all car enthusiasts. It’s only been a few years since the inaugural event, but it now attracts a crowd size comparable to a large sporting event. 5RS really stood out because it was parked to the side of all the action.
