To compensate for the Cayenne’s extra weight and poorer aerodynamics, the Panamera’s lithium-ion battery has been upgraded from 9. 4kWh to 10. 8kWh, while under the bonnet is a 3. 0-litre supercharged, 328bhp V6 engine sourced from Audi and... Sandwiched between this and an eight-speed automatic gearbox is a 95hp electric motor, with a separator clutch that can disengage drive from the engine for full electric mode. The battery takes four hours to fully charge from a domestic UK socket or 90 minutes from a Porsche wall charger, which is included in the car’s £61,474 price (that’s more than £20,000 cheaper than a Panamera with the same drivetrain). In pure electric mode it provides up to 22 miles of range and a top speed of 84mph, or can work in conjunction with the petrol engine to maximise performance. Versus other Cayennes, the $77,395 E-Hybrid has two additional buttons on its center console. Selecting “E-Charge” prioritizes replenishing a depleted battery so future electric driving is possible. This increases fuel consumption by about 20 percent, according to Porsche. In “E-Power” mode, though, the Cayenne moves solely on the single electric motor at speeds up to 78 mph. Every time the Cayenne starts, it’s in E-Power mode by default, assuming there is enough juice in the battery. Porsche claims that charging with a 240-volt hookup takes about three-and-a-half hours with the standard 3. 6-kW charger. Driving in a city makes it hard to wish for more power than the electric motor produces. Maximum acceleration with all 416 gas-and-electric horses should return a zero-to-60-mph sprint well below six seconds, and a quarter-mile will pass in just over 14 ticks, according to Porsche. It’s a light at the end of a long and dark tunnel of nonlinear hybrid brake feel.
