Aged Freight Station Collapses - Greeneville Sun

A former railroad freight station believed to be about a century old is being demolished after collapsing in recent days. A spokesman for Norfolk Southern Corporation, which owns the property, said the former freight depot "collapsed on its own sometime during the night of July 10 or early morning of July 11. ". Residents near the site, adjacent to railroad tracks on... Although documented details on the building's history are scant, it is believed to have been constructed sometime in the early 1900s. For decades, it was used to receive packages and other freight. People unloaded the cars out in the freight room, and then notified people that their packages had arrived," he explained. At the time the freight station was in use, home delivery services for packages were not available, so people in and around Greeneville would have traveled directly to the freight depot to receive their shipments, he said. Shelton recalled that Norfolk Southern ceased using the building as a freight station in 1957 when a ramp was constructed on the former passenger depot at the corner of Lorretta and Depot streets, allowing freight operations to share a facility...
