Mitsubishi calls its bold new front end the “Dynamic Shield”. The angular design has hints of Lexus’s “spindle” grille, but Mitsubishi claims the design elements have been part of the Pajero for generations. Inside there’s a redesigned wheel, new trim accents and more comfortable seating, with premium garnishes designed to give the cabin a more sophisticated feel. Standard equipment includes 18-inch wheels, cloth trim, climate control aircon, Bluetooth phone and audio, front and rear fog lights, a rear-view camera , tyre pressure monitoring and rear parking sensors. Neither too big nor too small, the Outlander can squeeze in seven seats — which is a prime reason for buying these things. Leg 3 on August 11 saw competitors driving over relatively flat and dry roads and Outlander PHEV’s electric motor-powered acceleration and its S-AWC integrated vehicle control system helped it to climb up to a 22nd place finish. On Leg 4 (August 12) and Leg 5 (August 13) the Outlander PHEV steadily improved its position. Nowadays Mitsubishi is an importer and has declared its interest lies in SUVs ahead of passenger cars, a preference which certainly strikes a chord in Australia these days. So it’s only a minor surprise we’re already road testing the facelift of the latest generation Outlander medium SUV barely two years into its life. After all, if this is the area where Mitsubishi’s is concentrating, then it makes sense to pay more attention to it than it has to the weary and ageing Lancer small car. We’re testing the cheapest model in the range, the 2. 0-litre front-wheel drive, five-speed (yes five-speed) manual LS. Let’s just mull that for a second.
