See if you can guess which of these three we’re describing. It’s a premium junior exec wagon from Germany, made by a company which seems to watch almost obsessively to see what the other two in this group are up to. So far, we could be talking about the Audi A4 Avant, BMW 3 Series Touring or Merc C-Class... It has about 500 litres of cargo space with the seats up, or three times that with them down. The 3 Series is the least hushed, but even on M Sport suspension it rides comfortably – and if you’re a keen driver, it’s the most rewarding of the group. Out of three extremely premium cabins, the Audi offers the best blend of space and hewn-from-rock build quality. The 3 Series has the best seats, but Mercedes is the most generous manufacturer of the three with the kit it gives you – to spec the others up to a similar standard would cost you around a couple of grand extra. We were surprised by a few creaks from the Merc’s dashboard, however, whose air of solidity yielded beneath a firm thumb on some of its buttons. Talking of buttons, though, the C-Class has one in the boot to drop the back seats in a one-shot movement – though overall it’s the A4 whose cargo bay is best shaped to make the most of the space it gives you. We’re still dealing with fine margins there, and the same goes when you look at the cost of ownership and find that the Merc is the cheapest over three years. Source: www.independent.co.uk

But now a C-Class SUV has joined the range of saloons, coupes and estates – and it’s set to be just as popular with fans of the three-pointed star brand. The GLC is a four-wheel-drive luxury package offering superb ride quality on road and impressive capability off-road. Generously sized, the GLC is powered by a 2. 1-litre, four cylinder diesel engine mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox using a column change gear shift as well as paddles behind the steering wheel. The AMG Line, tested here, is particularly distinctive with its sporty body kit, which includes front apron, rear apron and side skirts. The extra height of the GLC means it’s not only easy to get in and out of but capable of coping with a lot of bulky luggage. The interior is typically Mercedes – stylish, refined and very impressive with a nice blend of black leather and brushed aluminium on the dashboard, centre console and doors. The centre of the dashboard is dominated by a tablet-style display screen which is accessed by a combination of a touch sensitive mouse and a large dial on the piano-black gloss centre console. There’s a pair of four-cylinder diesels badged 220d and 250d respectively, that more powerful 250d offered with four-wheel drive - 4MATIC in Mercedes-speak. he petrol choice starts with a 2. 0-litre four-cylinder C200 with 184bhp, then a 245bhp version badged C300, both of which come in either Sport or AMG Line trims. If you want an AMG proper you’ve now got two core choices, the bonkers V8-powered C63 - with either 476bhp or 510bhp depending on your choice of standard or S models - or the new Mercedes-AMG C43. Think of the C43 as AMG-lite, even if the 3.... It trails those C63 models to 62mph by 0. 6 seconds, with a time of 4. 8 seconds, though it’ll strain at the same 155mph electronic speed limiter as them if you happen to be running through its German homeland. sefully, today in the rain, the C43 comes as standard with 4MATIC four-wheel.
