With a flip of the traction-control switch and a depression of the accelerator, the needle red-lined on the rpm gauge and the car sprang out of the snow with the alacrity of a mountain goat. To be sure, traction control is becoming increasingly prevalent on cars ranging from Mercedeses and BMWs to Chevy Cavaliers , and should not take the place of all-wheel drive. But it is comforting to know that even a refined luxury automobile such as the LS can handle itself in adversity. The point is that the LS 430 is more than a pretty face. Better still, this well-appointed, well-engineered sedan is priced very competitively, with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $55,675 (not including a $650 destination charge). Even with all of the bells and whistles added–such as the $13,570 Ultra Luxury Package, which includes such goodies as a Mark Levinson audio system, a Bluetooth-enabled DVD navigation system and camera-assisted electronic parking–it still costs... Pennsylvania State Police were looking for a vehicle that failed to slow for traffic and caused a three-vehicle crash Friday night on Interstate 78 in Northampton County. It occurred at 5:46 p. m. in the left lane of I-78 East near mile-marker 69 in Lower Saucon Township, state police at Belfast said. An unknown vehicle came upon slowing traffic and struck the rear of a 2005 Audi A6 that was then pushed into the rear of a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, police said. One occupant in the Audi, from Long Island City, New York, and two occupants in the Grand Cherokee, from Ohio and Michigan, were uninjured, police said. Police ask anyone with information on the initial vehicle to call investigators at 610-759-6106. The incident number is M06-1569882. The crash followed another rear-end collision caused by traffic congestion at 3:49 p. m. Friday on Interstate 78... In that incident, Lucinda Lysek, 43, of Bethlehem, slowed her 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek for traffic in the left lane and was struck from behind by a 2001 Lexus LS 430 driven by Daniel Quinones, 45, of Allentown, police said. Indirect Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems Making A Comeback On Some Imports - Tire Review

Indirect Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) are the systems that do not have air pressure sensors inside the tires. Rather, they detect a low tire by comparing relative wheel speeds via the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) wheel speed sensors. Older indirect TPMS are not as sensitive to changes in tire pressure as direct systems that actually monitor the air pressure inside the tire, but they are not as expensive either. Even so, the vast majority of vehicles that have TPMS use direct systems rather than indirect. Federal law requires the TPMS to alert the driver if the pressure inside a tire has dropped more than 25% below the recommended inflation pressure. Many vehicles abandoned indirect systems for direct systems to meet the federal mandate. One of the weaknesses of older indirect systems is that they may not turn on the warning light if all the tires are underinflated by a similar amount. If the recommended pressure is 32 psi, but all the tires are 24 psi (down 25%), the system won’t know there’s a problem because all the tires will be rotating at the same speed when the vehicle is being driven. New systems are taking advantage of better wheel speed sensors and modules to make indirect systems work. But even the newer systems suffer from the inability to read the tire pressure when the vehicle is sitting still. Source: www.tirereview.com
