Lexus' midsize SUV good for the pavement, but at home off-road. EDITOR WES RAYNAL: The GX is the safari-ready Toyota Land Cruiser Prado in the rest of the world, while the truck we call Land Cruiser is the Land Cruiser V8 elsewhere. Anyway, the GX is sort of a mix of old and new. The platform is old-school full-frame 4Runner (not Tundra, as I’ve seen reported elsewhere) while the interior is modern(ish), trimmed in wood and soft-touch materials, and is muy comfortable. The Sport setting (ironically named, in my opinion) firms things up further, but is still just fine in terms of comfort. The overall driving experience is low on sporty fun but high on refinement, as it should be with a Lexus. Even over terrible pavement (or I would imagine some off-roading) the GX is smooth and comfy. Silky and comfy it definitely is. CONTENT DIRECTOR RORY CARROLL: What a novelty, an SUV that doesn’t feel like it would be totally lost if it had to leave the pavement. The GX460 is an SUV in the tradition of the best old Range Rovers, Gelandewagens and Grand Cherokees -- it’s a seriously capable vehicle in a luxury wrapper. Inside, the GX460 is typical Lexus. Introduction While Lexus sells plenty of its RX 350 and new NX crossover SUVs, it still keeps a couple of traditional SUVs available as well. The 2015 Lexus GX 460 is one of them, and it carries the old-school SUV torch with sturdy body-on-frame construction, full-time four-wheel drive and a beefy V8 engine under the hood. But whether the GX is right for you will depend a lot on your priorities. Interestingly, this Lexus is still a pretty well-mannered companion in the city. The GX 460 also offers an available adaptive air suspension (to further soften the ride) plus a solid amount of luxury-oriented features. At this point, I ran into the issue that always comes up when packing an SUV: from the outside, they look like they ought to have a lot more cargo room than they actually have on the inside. In order to do real-truck things off-road, these trucks have full frames and lots of bulky mechanical gear underneath. coupled with the need to have existence-of-outside-world-denying sound insulation plus crash protection, this results in a vehicle that holds about as much stuff as much smaller wagons or hatchbacks. I was joking when I told my fellow campers that my beater '92 Honda Civic holds as much stuff as this 5,000-plus-pound monster, but we ended up filling up one of the back seats with our stuff. This isn't Toyota's fault -- they have done a nice execution of a midsize SUV here -- but it points out the reality that a lot of buyers of trucks like this (i. e. , the ones who never leave the asphalt as they drive from home to work to mall)... At this point, I was thinking that I'd have been better off getting a super-plush and roomy Lexus LS 460 F Sport , but the GX460 turned out to be very civilized on the highway south to the mountain.
