When the smallest SUV in Land Rover's lineup, the Freelander, went on sale in the U. S. in 2001, it had already been offered in other markets for three years. Land Rover tells us that it took those three years to develop a V-6 engine for the Freelander for the power-hungry American market. But by the time the little Land Rover made its stateside debut, it was already showing signs of being dated. Land Rover's compact luxury sport-utility didn't have much of a run in the U. S. after sales slowed dramatically in 2004, the British truckmaker stopped exporting it. The following year, the MG Rover Group in England closed, and that meant the... So Land Rover needed to find a replacement engine for its smallest ute. Power comes from a version of the new 3. 2-liter inline six-cylinder that will be under the hood of the '07 Volvo S80. In the LR2, the engine is upgraded for off-road use to resist dust, mud, and water. The transversely mounted six-cylinder makes 230 horsepower (five less than in Volvo form) and 234 pound-feet of torque (two less than the Volvo version). Hooked to a six-speed automatic, it will take the LR2 from standstill to 60 mph in 8. 4 seconds, claims Land Rover, and on to a 124-mph top speed. Source: www.caranddriver.com

Eight years ago, at our favorite driving site in southern Ohio's Hocking State Forest, we were greeted by an aural assault halfway between keening and screeching. The racket was emanating from a zillion cicadas that had crawled into the trees and were singing for sex-really, this is true-which is a romantic strategy few of us, even in our most desperate high-school years, ever contemplated. For 20 years, we've been drawn to the Hocking Hills' six parks, each carved out of Black Hand sandstone that has eroded into baroque gargoyles, twisted columns, 200-foot-deep chasms, dank caverns, natural amphitheaters, and British-racing-green... On this trip, however, our Buckeye cicadas were as quiet as, well, dead cicadas, and for good reason. The place was abuzz with cicada-killing wasps, which are as much as two inches long and resemble yellow jackets or MiG-25 Foxbats, depending on how closely they skim your nose. We tell you this because the Hocking Hills are teeming with all sorts of fast-moving fauna, sometimes us. This time, we were drawn to southern Ohio to examine the latest batch of compact luxury SUVs. These are small utes in a small niche, because "compact" becomes "mid-size" as soon as the vehicle's length stretches much beyond 181 inches-the length of the Acura RDX, as a matter of fact. This ruled out a few SUVs we might otherwise have included-the Lincoln MKX and the Lexus RX350 , for example, both with strong V-6s and luxury aplenty. Source: www.caranddriver.com

Bringin' Disco Back: 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport - LA Canyon News

UNITED STATES—The original Land Rover Discovery was succeeded by the LR3 (in U. S. markets), which received a mid-run facelift and name change to, LR4. Makes sense, so far, right. Liking where their new model nomenclature was going, marketing executives at Land Rover decided to makeover their compact crossover (the Freelander) and slot it into the entry-level spot as…that’s right…the LR2. Everything seems to be logically... Instead, it replaces the LR2. When posed the question, “Will it slot in between the Range Rover and the Evoque. ”, one Land Rover Experience rep replied, “No, the Discovery replaces the Freelander [LR2]. The Evoque is a Range Rover. ” The implication seemed to be that the Evoque shares something special with the top-of-the line Range Rover, while the Discovery is merely another Land Rover product. Could it be that somewhere in the not-so-distant future, Land Rover will resemble something more of an umbrella company featuring two or more distinct divisions: Range Rover & Discovery: The first being the premium division, the second being more... An initial impression would suggest there is a much stronger link between the Range Rover Evoque and the new Discovery Sport than Range Rover PR reps would like you to believe.
