2015 Kia Sportage marries style and function. Pulling into a local eatery in a 2015 Kia Sportage, my friend and I noticed that, of the 40 plus vehicles in the parking lot, seven or eight were sedans, one was a pickup and the rest where all compact CUVs. The migration to the compact CUV has become a full-blown stampede with basic CUVs, entry-level luxury CUVs, premium CUVs – you name it. The Japanese had what we now consider a CUV for years until someone at Toyota had the bright idea to bring one... In Korea, Kia had been building a very basic CUV based on the Mazda Bongo from 1993-2004 followed by a second generation that went on until 2010 selling in small numbers and was largely ignored. But by then Kia had entered the Peter Schreyer era and a lot of things began to change very quickly. The 2015 Sportage is differentiated by two engines, front- or all-wheel-drive and trim. The entry LX and mid-trim models come with a twin cam, 2. 4-litre inline four-cylinder engine with 182 hp and 177 lb/ft of torque with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. Behind the Hellcat's 20-inch wheels are honkin' front brake rotors measuring 15. 4 inches with six-piston Brembo-brand calipers. Out back are four-piston Brembo calipers putting the squeeze on 13. 8-inch rotors. The Challenger Hellcat stopped in a hurry with 60-mph-to-zero braking distances, get this, shorter than all the luxury coupe competitors. The Challenger's effective braking system, perhaps helped by wider front tires than the others, was clearly working well for the heavier coupe. 99-foot stopping distance was shorter than the next closest 119. 47 feet of the ATS-V. This surprised us not only because of its short distance but also because of the consistency of the 60-mph-to-zero braking distances. The Challenger Hellcat, once again, did better than expected not only in braking but also on the road course with surprising proficiency for its size on the 1. 46-mile, nine-turn North Circuit at the Autobahn Country Club in Joliet, Ill. It could have been much worse, and I think we would have accepted it even so. By anchoring my foot well, I was able to finesse the accelerator, and it never stepped out on its own, lap after lap. Impressive for its size is one thing, but compared with the BMW M4, Cadillac ATS-V and Lexus RC F the Hellcat didn't have the well-rounded balance of the smaller, lighter luxury coupes, according to Cars.
