Plane crash near Colbert kills pilot - Durant Daily Democrat

The pilot of a single-engine plane bound for Fort Worth Spinks Airport was killed when the plane crashed around 3 p. m. Sunday near Winnet Road, approximately five miles southeast of Colbert. Their last stop had been in Springfield, Mo. The 1979 Beechcraft Bonanza plane had just passed over Colbert when it went down just feet from the county road. Engine failure is listed as the probable cause of the crash, but officials are expected at the scene today to continue their investigation. Just moments before the plane went down, witnesses heard what they explained as a “boom” and noises unlike what a normal plane flying over would make. It reportedly was opened to the page explaining about engine failure. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol secured the location and crash debris until the National Transportation Safety Board could arrive Monday to begin its investigation. The Bryan County Sheriff’s Office, and Colbert, Achille and Cartwright fire departments worked the crash. Earlier Sunday, one person was injured during a two-vehicle crash at the West Highway 70 and Silo Road intersection. Authorities at the scene said a 1993 Jeep driven by Nicholas A. Dickerson, 26, Silo, was southbound on Silo Road approaching the stop sign when he failed to yield and drove into the path of a Dodge truck driven by Douglas Hafer, 57, pulling. Source:

Perryville High School custodian ready for his 60th first day of school -

Perryville High School will be shining clean and ready for the students to arrive tomorrow. You have Steve Myers' word on it. Myers, 65, is used to the first day of school. He also graduated from Cecil County Public Schools so this is his 60th first day. Myers started in the school system when he was a student at Elkton High. He started working for the school system as a custodian at Cherry Hill Middle in 1968. In September of 1969, he was assigned to work at Kenmore Elementary (the current Providence School building). Five years later, in 1974, Myers got a job assignment which changed his life. He moved to the head custodian post at Perryville Elementary School. She also still works for the school system and will be at Thomson Estates this school year. Myers said he likes going to work every day. "I've got property taxes, a new truck, and a new Jeep to pay for. I have sick leave (accumulated) for another year," Myers said. He has also set a goal of working for the system for 50 years. Myers and Dr. Delbert Jackson are the current longest-serving system staffers. Source:

Legendary sheriff's son and softball - The Logan Banner

Prior to the many improvements that have been made to the location, it was the scene of tremendous activity for men’s and women’s softball leagues, both fast -pitch and slow -pitch. As a young boy, I used to sit in the stands and be amazed at the fast- pitch teams that existed, particularly in the 1960’s and ‘70’s. Among the team names that come to mind are Gordon Foods, Amherst Coal and National Cable Repair. Some great players that I saw as a young boy were Jack and Jerry Baisden of the Gordon Foods team. Jack, now in his ‘70’s, was playing in a senior softball league in Charleston just a few years ago. There were other fellows, like Esmond and Arvis Curry, both pitchers and brothers, and who were so competitive I always felt like they were trying to kill each other when they played in games where they were pitted against each other. Ted was a mighty tough catcher and played for many years. I can remember a young third baseman named William “Tootie” Carter being a good player. Years later, when the games were played mostly on the Midelburg Island field, there were younger players who become stars. Guys like now State Senator Arthur Kirkendoll and former Logan High great Sid Rayburn come to mind. both of them played both fast pitch and slow pitch, a task that is not easily done, and few did it. As for myself,. Source:
