In de onregelmatig terugkerende rubriek ‘In het wild’ zetten we bijzondere auto’s in het zonnetje die we zomaar op straat zijn tegengekomen. Gewoon, omdat het kan en omdat het anno 2015 steeds minder vanzelfsprekend is dat je nog iets leuks aantreft tussen al het grijze leaseblik. Deze keer: een pick-up van een merk waarvan we vergaten waren dat ze ooit pick-ups bouwden. Een echte Jeep J20, een pick-up van het merk dat bekend staat om z'n Wranglers en Cherokees. In 1962 begon Jeep met het in elkaar schroeven van fullsize pick-ups, oer-Amerikaanse werkpaarden die tot 1971 Gladiator werden genoemd. In 1971 kwam een nieuwe generatie pick-ups op de markt, een reeks modellen gebaseerd op de toen recente Wagoneer. Tot 1974 werden ze als J2000 en J3000 aangeduid, maar vanaf 1974 gebruikte Jeep de aanduiding J10 en J20. Tot 1988 waren de J's in de showrooms van Jeep te vinden, de Wagoneer mocht met z'n klassieke koets zelfs tot 1991 door. Onder de kap een 5,9-liter metende V8 die gas slurpt en maar liefst - nu komt het - 177 pk loslaat. met zo'n uiterlijk en in koeienletters 'Jeep' op de laadklep mag van ons alles. We kennen Wagoneers, Cherokees, Wranglers en zelfs Patriots, maar een pick-up van Jeep waren ook wij bijna vergeten. 2014 Bantam Jeep Fest - Four Wheeler Network

If you know anything about Jeeps, you probably know that the Wrangler is the outgrowth of a long line of military vehicles. However, what you may not know is that the first jeeps were produced in a tiny little town of Butler, Pennsylvania, a full year before the army ever placed orders for the massive amounts of jeeps that helped win World War II. Bantam was struggling... This is why the town of Butler has held the Bantam Heritage Jeep Festival every summer for the past few years. And if you’re into JKs, there were plenty of them to be found, along with virtually every other designation of Jeep vehicle that could be had. Next year’s happening is already on our docket for June 12-14, 2015. This week’s example: the 2015 Mazda CX-9, a seven-passenger SUV that reminds you, in several ways, that despite the best efforts of the TDA (Timid Drivers of America), spirited driving can be fun. The first sign is the bright red digital gear indicator in the center of the instrument panel, showing the six-speed automatic (and manumatic) transmission whipping through the gears, lickety-split, one, two, three, four, five, six. To that end, Mazda’s motto – its marketing voice, really – is Zoom-Zoom. They made their bones with some interesting cars – the hugely successful Miata, and the three generations of rotary-powered RX-7s (full disclosure: I’ve had Gen 1 and Gen 3. Gen 3 ate its transmission at 80,000 miles and its twin turbos were... The CX-9, then, is a good expression of what the driving geeks at Mazda are trying to do, in making a car that’s more than just an exercise in ennui.
