2011 Infiniti M56 Sport - Long-Term Road Test Update - Car and Driver

One look at the stylish 2011 Infiniti M56 was enough to whet our appetites. We needed to see how this aggressive update on Infiniti’s top-drawer sedan (now that the Q45 has vanished) would stand up to the not-so-tender mercies of Michigan roads for 40,000 miles. Lots of muscle, head-turning sheetmetal, gorgeous interior, and lots of tech goodies: What could possibly go wrong. We anticipated a communion of unalloyed joy, 40,000 miles of pure driving pleasure. A long-legged thoroughbred created to make miles disappear at wholesale rates, simultaneously making its driver look forward to the next hundred—or thousand—miles with anticipation. Over the course of almost 16 months and 41,693 miles, the suite of advanced electronics (adaptive cruise, lane-departure warning and prevention, blind-spot warning and intervention, collision warning, brake assist, adaptive headlights, “eco” mode)... Everyone who tried the “eco” setting, which physically limits gas-pedal travel to save fuel, reported that one try was enough and never used it again. The adaptive cruise control went through cranky episodes when it refused to set—the only way to bring it back online was to stop, shut off the ignition, and start up again. 2011 Infiniti M56 - Road Test - Car and Driver

After 21 years on the market and an amount of cash spent on advertising to at least equal this season’s Yankees payroll, Nissan’s upscale brand is still often misspelled with a “y. ” One day last March, the Los Angeles Craigslist website had 79... Poor Infiniti. Each of those last three brands outsells Infiniti by more than two to one. But that last M , bobtailed and chiseled and called the Nissan Fuga in Japan (where Infiniti doesn’t exist), couldn’t really move the needle. Carrying a $50,000 ticket, the V-8 Infiniti M45 drove well—witness comparison-test victories in ’05 and ’06 —but it had the plain interior of, well, a Nissan. The M, in both V-6 and V-8 dress, currently accounts for just 10 percent of Infiniti sales. Where is Infiniti headed in its quest for identity and success. M37 prices hardly budge: The entry point rises only $450, to $47,115 for the base M37 equipped with a 330-hp, 3. 7-liter V-6 from the Nissan 370Z. The car being pummeled here is a $64,065, rear-drive, V-8–equipped M56 (all-wheel drive is available). It’s the base $58,415 M56—that’s $5400 more than last year, in part because navigation is now standard—fitted with the $3650 Sport package and the $2000 Sport Touring package (more about those forthwith). 2011 Infiniti M56x - Short Take Road Test - Car and Driver

Stop us if youve heard this one before: Theres a rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan thats also available with all-wheel drive. Its sticker price and curb weight are slightly higher, and its performance and fuel economy are lower. The subject here is the Infiniti M56x , and true to the formula, its a lot like the rear-wheel-drive M56. Consider that a good thing. Opt to add a lower-case x to the badge of your M56, and youll leave the dealership $2500 poorer, as the base price is $60,915. Fuel economy drops from 25 mpg highway to 23, and the 16-mpg city figure is unchanged. (The difference in observed fuel economy was more pronounced, however, as we averaged 18 mpg with this M56x versus the 23 with a rear-drive M56S. ) Curb weight is up about 180 pounds, and the monster 420-hp, 5. 6-liter V-8 under the hood pushes... The M56xs braking performance, 166 feet from 70 to 0 mph, and skidpad grip, 0. 83g, are close to those of the M56S. But the M56x shows better than its rear-wheel-drive counterpart in some crucial nontest situations. We have yet to drive an M56 without the Sport package, which comes with high-performance summer tires on 20-inch rims and a rear-wheel steering system. Source: www.caranddriver.com
