2012 Infiniti FX50 DIGITAL EDITOR ANDREW STOY: I've driven a lot of cars in my life, but the 2012 Infiniti FX50 is the first one that's ever warned me about a tornado. Ominous skies were looming as I picked up my son from preschool in the FX, but we were paying more attention to our luxurious accommodations. The styling is polarizing, but I actually find the FX attractive despite not generally being a fan of the Ace and Gary school of design. The low, swooping lines, big wheels and short greenhouse do sacrifice interior room for style, but the FX isn't aiming at utility buyers. Particularly with the V8 underhood, Infiniti is appealing to a very small subset of buyers with the FX—the performance-minded enthusiast who, paradoxically, prefers the driving dynamics of an SUV. Or who thinks that they offer more utility than a good-sized sedan (unlikely, at least in the case of the FX). So, who's paying $66K for a smallish, good-but-not-great performing luxury crossover with atrocious fuel economy. In the midst of pondering the FX customer conundrum, a woman's voice broke in over the satellite radio: “Tornado warning in 23 miles. ” My 3-year-old looked at me and I looked at him, then we both set our gaze on the clouds as Infiniti's target market grew crystal clear: Luxury sport crossover buyers in Oklahoma and Kansas. It’s an unlikely comparison, this 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 vs 2013 Infiniti FX50S Mashup Review. The 2013 Infiniti FX50S looks more confused, like the offspring of Snooki and a puffer fish. Inside, the story changes, where the FX feels like a gentleman’s penthouse and the SRT8 a bachelor pad. Rich wood and quilted leather envelop the Infiniti’s interior, coddling its occupants with sumptuous furnishings. Under the hood, the SRT8’s 470-HP 6. 4-L Hemi should easily have trumped the Infiniti’s 390-HP 5. 0-L VK. Although the Jeep was fast and sounded fantastic, it lacked that last bit of “oomph” I was expecting for such a powerhouse. The Infiniti was a pleasant surprise, on the other hand, its violent bursts of acceleration provoking multiple belly laughs. While the Grand Cherokee SRT8’s adaptive AWD typically splits power 35%/65% front/rear, the FX50S’ ATTESA E-TS system channels 100% to the rear, unless it detects slippage. Infiniti is the new kid on the block, returning after its lukewarm Q45 in the 90s. If anything, it has a tougher job to get itself noticed than it did back then. But Infiniti - with cars like this - is clearly not mucking around. INTERIOR Quality: The Infiniti’s interior is at once individual but familiar. The leather is of a very high standard, soft and supple, and the quilted stitching on the seatbacks is a very nice touch. The steering-wheel boss feels like it could have come from a Micra and the external door handles feel cheap. Comfort: The front seats are generously-sized with adjustable bolsters as well as inflatable wings on the seat squab for under-thigh support.
