De AutoWeek Top 50 is een lijst van de - in onze ogen - 50 belangrijkste auto's van de afgelopen 25 jaar. Elke week zet één van de redacteuren een kandidaat voor de eindlijst in het zonnetje. Deze week de auto die de sportieve coupé bereikbaar maakte voor de massa: de Hyundai Scoupé. In de jaren tachtig was Hyundai al volop aanwezig in Nederland, maar de consument liep niet direct weg met de anonieme modellen die de Koreanen destijds op de markt brachten. De introductie van de tweede generatie van de Excel in 1989 bracht daar verandering in, want een jaar later zette Hyundai op basis van dat model de Scoupé neer. Plotsklaps hadden de Koreanen een lekker gelijnde coupé, een sportauto voor iedereen. De Scoupé - een samentrekking van Sporty en Coupé - kreeg dezelfde 1,5-liter viercilinder met 84 pk mee die voor de Excel ingekocht werd bij Mitsubishi. De automaat had zelfs 12,5 seconden nodig voor de sprint en hield het bij 160 km/h al voor gezien. De Scoupé was een uiterlijke smaakmaker die een duidelijke boodschap de wereld in stuurde: Hyundai doet en denkt mee. In 1992 werd de Scoupé bij de kladden gegrepen en gefacelift. “Buy American” might be a nice slogan but in 2014, only four American models wound up on the year’s ten top-selling vehicles according to Edmunds. One of those, the Ram 1500, is made by an American-based subsidiary of London-based Fiat Chrysler Automobiles ( FCAU:US ), to which an American-made purist might take exception. Whereas American companies produced four of the Top 10 selling 2014 vehicles, Japanese companies took the other six spots. com reports that the Toyota Camry, third overall among American car sales, was the best-selling Japanese model with 389,091 units sold that year. The 2015 Global Automotive Executive Survey released by global auditing firm KPMG reports that the Hyundai/Kia group of South Korea is the auto manufacturing business whose market share was most expected to increase by auto executives. As of 2015, the report shows that Hyundai/Kia holds the fifth-overall ranking for mass market vehicle production. The story of South Korean car makers entering the U. Call settling in as Summerville football coach - Charleston Post Courier

Though he is officially listed as the interim head football coach at Summerville High School for the 2015 season, Joe Call has hit the ground running with every intention of earning the full-time tag next spring. Call, 36, becomes the school’s second head coach in 64 years, replacing the legendary John McKissick, who retired after 63 seasons and 621 career victories. Call is McKissick’s grandson and also was the team’s offensive coordinator for the last nine years. Call says he feels no pressure externally to excel this season. “I don’t think about (the interim tag),” said Call recently. Heading into his third full week as the head coach, Call has been non-stop during the month of July as he prepares his team for the start of preseason practice on July 31. The coach first met with every member of the coaching staff, individually,... “We don’t need to change much here, but there are things we can do to make it better for our kids,” said Call. Every person affiliated with this program has a purpose and it’s going to take every member of the program rowing the boat in the same direction. That includes the coaching staff, the players, the training staff and the fans.
