Truck enthusiasts and journalist alike have long swooned over the Ford F-150 Raptor. Introduced in 2010, the Raptor proved Ford could make a Baja trophy truck and sell it to the average Joe. First equipped with the old 5.4-liter V-8 and then the

Ford's global-market Ranger pickup could get the Raptor treatment - Digital Trends

Australian buyers have plenty of pickup trucks to choose from but the Ford F-150 Raptor has never been one of them. The all-new second-gen model that was presented earlier this year in Detroit is tentatively scheduled to finally arrive Down Under in early 2017, and rumors coming out of Australia indicate that it could be joined by a smaller model dubbed Ranger... Based on the Ranger Crew Cab, the range-topping Raptor will benefit from a long list of off-road-focused add-ons including a large bull bar up front, a snorkel, and flared fenders all around. It’s too early to tell whether the Blue Oval will make major mechanical modifications to the Ranger Raptor. For what it’s worth, though, the company made a trip to an Australian patent office to protect the names “Ranger Raptor,” “Ford Ranger Raptor,” and “Ranger FX4? a couple of weeks ago. If the rumors do materialize, the Ford Ranger Raptor will likely be presented to the public in the next few months and it will go on sale in early 2016. Designed primarily for the Australian market, it could also be sold in a handful of... Source: www.digitaltrends.com
  • 2014 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor Supercrew - Specifications ...

The SVT Raptor Supercrew is a high-performance version of Ford's venerable F-150 pickup truck that is one of the most unique and capable off-road production vehicles ever made. With an extra-wide stance, specially-engineered suspension and oversized tires, the SVT Raptor Supercrew (which is also available in Supercab form) is unwieldy on the pavement but a superhero in the desert, where it can travel at nearly triple-digit speeds through terrain that would tear lesser trucks apart.

Ford has continually tweaked and updated the Raptor since it hit the market in 2009. For the previous model year the Blue Oval added a new set of wheels that can be converted to a rugged beadlock design, HID headlights and the automaker's MyFord Touch infotainment system. For a full description of the changes, scroll down to the "Charting the Changes" section.

Ford spent a great deal of time and R & D dollars transforming the F-150 into the Raptor, even going so far as to construct a 62-mile durability loop in the desert of Borrego Springs, California, to replicate the conditions of the demanding Baja 1000 off-road race. The truck's thoroughly re-engineered suspension features 13.4 inches of usable wheel travel in the rear and 11.2 in the front in addition to industry-exclusive internal bypass shocks. Supplied by Fox Racing, the shocks feature high-altitude commercial jet-style fluid and an internal bypass system to stiffen the shock as it travels to prevent bottoming out.

Thirty-five-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires modified specifically for the Raptor provide a connection to the ground, while an Off Road mode calibrates the transmission, stability control and traction control to operate effectively in high-speed off-road situations.

Power comes from a 6.2-liter SOHC V8 that produces 411 horsepower and 434 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic sends power to all four wheels (four-wheel-drive is standard, as one would expect) and features a full manual mode that gives the driver complete control over gear selection - upshifts are not commanded at redline, and downshifts are allowed at the lowest gear possible as defined by the engine speed.

Fuel economy is about what one would expect of a large pickup with a big V8: 11 mpg in the city and 16 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. The Supercrew-spec Raptor features a 1,030-pound payload capacity and a 8,000-pound towing capacity, up 100 and 2,000 pounds, respectively, from the Raptor SuperCab.

The result of all of the Raptor's specialized off-road and powertrain components? A pickup that can traverse sand, ruts, and other intense bits of terrain at race-truck velocities.

Unique Look Inside and OutBeside the raised suspension and monstrous wheels, a unique grille, hood and fender vents and dark-plastic fender flares set the Raptor apart from the standard F-150. An appearance package with matte black accent graphics is available.

The cabin features a grippy, SVT-exclusive steering wheel with an orange on-center marker, while an optional accent package adds bright orange trim on the seats, dash and doors. A 4.2-inch LCD productivity screen located between the gauges of the instrument panel provides information about steering wheel angle and vehicle angle on a grade during off-road maneuvers, and can also display vehicle status info.

Four pre-wired auxiliary switches are included to facilitate the addition of additional lights, winches and other aftermarket items.

All Raptor models come standard with SYNC, Ford's Bluetooth-based connectivity system that allows smartphone users to place calls and stream music by using voice commands or steering wheel-mounted buttons. It can also read incoming texts aloud to help the driver keep his or her eyes on the road, and allows the use of Ford-approved apps like The Wall Street Journal news and Pandora radio.

The Raptor can be spec'd with MyFord Touch, an infotainment system that builds on SYNC by letting users control everything from navigation to climate control to the sound system with voice commands. MyFord Touch also replaces conventional sound system knobs and buttons with a center-mounted eight-inch touchscreen, dual 4.2-inch displays in the instrument cluster and touch-sensitive controls in the center stack. Many consumers report that the system is a "love it or hate it" item, so those interested in the Raptor are advised to try before they buy.

While the standard Raptor comes in SuperCab form, which features two standard front doors and two rear-hinged doors that open to reveal a relatively small rear passenger space with seating for three, the Supercrew model adds two normal-sized rear doors and a larger rear passenger area.

Standard and Optional FeaturesThe Raptor comes standard with combination leather/cloth upholstery, an AM/FM/CD stereo, Ford's SYNC mobile phone connectivity system, a reverse sensing system, aluminum running boards and HID headlights in addition to expected items like A/C, power windows and locks and cruise control.

Numerous options are available, with highlights including a navigation system, a premium Sony Audio system, a rear parking camera and dual zone automatic climate control.

Charting the ChangesFor the previous model year, Ford upgraded the Raptor with wheels that can be converted to an off-road-ready beadlock design. A common aftermarket upgrade for off roaders, beadlocks are designed specifically for ultra low tire pressure rock crawling situations, where they significantly reduce the risk of a tire rolling off of the wheel rim's "bead." For serious rock crawlers, they're a must-have.

The Raptor's beadlocks aren't trail-ready from the factory due to legal factors, but buyers can remove a decorative outer ring, then have a shop dismount and remount the tire in a lockable position. A beadlock ring kit from Ford Racing will be required, but the whole conversion process costs less than a full set of four new beadlock wheels.

In addition to newly standard HID headlamps, the latest Raptor also gains a 4.2-inch LCD screen for the automaker's standard infotainment system as standard or a larger, eight-inch LCD touchscreen that brings with it an upgrade to the more complex MyFord Touch software. Another 4.2-inch screen is mounted in the instrument cluster and it can display various gauge and trip computer functions.

Other recent changes include the incorporation of a Torsen front differential, which adds extra grip when off-roading, particularly when climbing steep angles when front grip is essential, and a forward-looking off-road camera. Mounted in the front grille, the camera provides a live video feed via the eight-inch dash screen of exactly what lies ahead of the truck when traveling below 15 miles per hour. This feature is intended to give drivers the ability to have a spotter-like function without needing to get out of the truck, helping to avoid rocks, ruts or other obstacles when crawling through the most intense terrain.

Occupant SafetyAll Raptors come standard with dual front, front side and full-length side curtain airbags in addition to traction and stability control systems and electronic brakeforce distribution.

Key CompetitorsAlthough there's no other truck that can withstand the punishment of driving through the desert at extreme speeds like the Raptor can, less hard-core off roading pickups include the Ram 2500 Power Wagon and the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 equipped with Z71 off-road package.

The twelfth-generation Ford F-Series is a light-duty pickup truck produced by Ford from the 2009 to 2014 model years. On the outside, the design was restricted to evolutionary styling upgrades, with a larger grille and headlights bringing it in line with the styling of the Super Duty trucks; as with many other Ford vehicles of the time, the interior saw the introduction of higher-quality materials in all but the most basic trim levels.

Outside of Mexico, the Lincoln Mark LT was discontinued, replaced by the Platinum trim of the F-150.[2] However, this trim line is still sold as the Lincoln Mark LT in Mexico. For the 2010 model year, the SVT Raptor high-performance truck was introduced; unlike its Lightning predecessor, it was a vehicle dedicated to off-road driving.

In North America, the twelfth-generation F-150 was produced at the Dearborn Truck plant in Dearborn, Michigan, as well as the Kansas City Assembly plant in Claycomo, Missouri. In December 2014, it was replaced by the thirteenth-generation 2015 F-150, unveiled in January 2014.

Ford revealed the 2009 F-150 design at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Development began under chief engineer Matt O'Leary in November 2003 under the code name "P-415", after P-221 production began in June 2003.[3] General design work was done under Patrick Schiavone into late 2005, with further exterior changes taking place during late 2006 to the tailgate design and wheel lip arches during a development hiatus. The final design freeze later took place in early 2007.[4] Production of the series began in October 2008 at Ford's Kansas City Assembly Plant.[5]

Ford originally planned to expand the F-Series platform by reintroducing the F-100 as a midsize truck. Known internally as P525, the F-100 would have served as the global replacement for Ford Ranger in 2010 or 2011,[6] The project was ultimately shelved, with the company developing the Ranger T6 as a global midsize truck and in North America, Ford focused on developing fuel-efficient powertrains such as the EcoBoost V6 and the 6-speed automatic transmission for the F-150.[7]

The 2009 F-150 featured a larger and more flexible interior, an updated three-bar grille, and additional choices of trim levels. The chassis included lighter-weight, high-strength steel for better fuel economy and safety and improved payload and towing capacity. For the first time in the history of the F-Series, a V8 engine was standard in all models; no 6-cylinder was available. Regular cab models were once again produced with standard-length doors rather than two short, rear-opening doors. All Flareside models in 2009 were made with new badging on the previous generation's boxes and were discontinued at the end of the model year when stock had run out, echoing a similar situation in the first year of the eighth generation.

In 2009, the SVT Raptor off-road truck was introduced. Initially available as a Supercab with a unique 5.5-foot box, it was available with either a 320-hp 5.4L V8 or an optional 411-hp 6.2L V8 from the Super Duty line. The standard wheel of FX4 models was enlarged to 18".

2011 marked a major upgrade to the powertrain lineup. In the interest of increasing fuel economy, both versions of the 4.6L V8 and the 5.4L V8 were discontinued. In their place were a 3.7L V6 and a 5.0L V8. Between the two engines was an all-new 3.5L twin-turbocharged V6. Dubbed EcoBoost, the 3.5L V6 produced 365 hp.

For 2012, the F-150 sported a ten-grade lineup (XL, STX, XLT, FX2, FX4, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, Harley-Davidson and SVT Raptor).

For 2013, the F-150 received minor changes such as 3 new grilles (replacing all 4 previous grilles), new optional 18-, 20-, or 22-inch wheels, Sync with MyFord, MyFord Touch navigation system, new power-folding and telescoping trailer tow mirrors (taken from the Super Duty models), high-intensity discharge headlamps, 3 new color options (Blue Jeans Metallic, Kodiak Brown Metallic and Ruby Red Clearcoat Metallic), new Alcantara seats in the FX Appearance Package, black or pecan leather in Platinum, the return of the Limited model and the 6.2-liter V8 being made available in XLT, FX2, and FX4 (SuperCab and SuperCrew only).

For 2014, a special truck called the Tremor was introduced, essentially an EcoBoost-equipped FX2 or FX4 truck in a regular cab model with a 6.5' bed, a special FX Appearance Package, a flow-through center console with bucket seats and a 4.10 rear gear final drive ratio.

Also new in 2014, the STX trim level also became available on SuperCrew models with the 5.5' box. In addition an STX Sport package was added for 2014 including 20" wheels, black cloth seats, and black exterior accents.[8]

    Powertrain[edit]

Three engines were initially offered with the 2009 redesign: a revised 5.4 L 3-valve Triton V8 that is E85 capable with an output rating of 320 hp (240 kW) and 395 lb·ft (536 N·m) of torque, a 292 hp (218 kW) 4.6 L 3-valve V8, and a 248 hp (185 kW) 4.6 L 2-valve V8. The 3-valve 5.4 and 4.6 liter V8s were mated to Ford's new 6R80E 6-speed automatic transmission while the 4R75E 4-speed automatic transmission used previously was carried over for the 2-valve 4.6 L V8. The 4.2 L OHV V6 engine, which was previously available, was dropped due to the closure of the Essex engine plant where it was produced.

For the 2011 model year, an all-new engine lineup was offered. Two of the engines, a 3.7 L V6 and a 5.0 L V8, both based on the 2011 Ford Mustang engines, both offer E85 flex-fuel capability. The 6.2 L V8 used in the 2011 Ford Super Duty was made available with the F-150 Platinum, Lariat, SVT Raptor, and Harley Davidson editions. Finally, the 3.5 L direct-injected twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 was offered in the F-150 starting in early 2011. All engines were paired with a new six-speed automatic transmission (6R80).[9] Electric power-assisted steering was made available on all engines besides the 6.2. Since 2008, the Ford F-150 has towing and hauling capacity of 11,300 lbs and 3,060 lbs, respectively.

The 2009 Ford F-150 featured front-seat side impact airbags and Ford's Safety Canopy System for the first and second rows as head protection in the event of a side impact. It also featured Ford's exclusive ADVANCETRAC RSC (Roll Stability Control)--an electronic Stability control and anti-rollover safety feature also available in other Ford vehicles, from the Fusion to the Expedition.

The F-150 comes standard with AdvanceTrac Electronic Stability Control, front and rear row side curtain airbags, and front row torso side airbags. In the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash tests the F-150 received the Good overall score in both front and side impact tests and was given the Top Safety Pick award.[11]

At the 2008 SEMA show, four 2009 Ford F-150s were unveiled: the F-150 Heavy Duty DEWALT Contractor, the FX-4 by X-Treme Toyz, the F-150 by Street Scene Equipment, and the Hi-Pa Drive F-150. The Heavy Duty DEWALT Contractor was built in a DeWalt theme. The FX-4, also called Fahrenheit F-150, was built for outdoor lifestyle enthusiasts. The Street Scene Equipment version is a lowered truck built with performance and style. The Hi-Pa Drive F-150 was powered by 4 electric in-wheel motors rated over 480 hp (360 kW) and over 375 ft·lbf (508 N·m) torque combined.[13]

Ford SVT Raptor[edit] Crystal Clear app kedit.svg This section may need to be rewritten entirely to comply with Wikipedia's quality standards. You can help. The discussion page may contain suggestions. (December 2011)

The SVT Raptor entered showrooms in late 2009 as a dedicated off-roader, with sales being much better than expected. It was powered by a 5.4 L (330 CID) engine, with a 6.2 L option. The 5.4  L (330 CID) engine has 310 horsepower (230 kW) and 365 ft·lbf (495 N·m) of torque .The 6.2 L (379 CID) engine has 411 horsepower (306 kW) and 434 ft·lbf (588 N·m) of torque.[10] The suggested retail price was $3000 over the 5.4 L model. A six-speed automatic is standard.[14] It has Fox Racing Shox internal bypass shocks with external reservoirs which allows for 11" of suspension travel in front, and 12" in the rear. It comes standard with 35" BFGoodrich All Terrain tires, and a rear Locking differential with a 4.10:1 gear ratio. Also, it is available in tuxedo black, oxford white, blue flame, and molten orange with a "digital mud" decal scheme as an option.[15] In April 2011, Ford sold 1,186 Raptors, outselling Honda's Ridgeline.[16] The first production Raptor, molten orange with the digital mud graphic, sold at an auction for $130,000. Ford donated all proceeds above the MSRP to charity. The race version, F-150 SVT Raptor R, was built for the Baja 1000 races. It uses a 6.2 L engine rated at 500 hp.[17]

For 2011, the SVT Raptor would be powered exclusively with the 6.2 L V8 as the only engine choice. Other notable changes to the 2011 SVT Raptor include availability in a 4-door Super Crew cab and a new color option Ingot Silver Metallic making the Raptor available in a total of five colors.[18]

2012 Raptors eliminated the open differential in the front end in favor of a Torsen helical gear limited slip differential.[19]

Shelby American makes a higher performance version of the SVT Raptor called the Shelby Raptor. And Hennessey Performance Engineering makes a SUV version of the SVT Raptor called the Hennessey VelociRaptor SUV.

    Body, frame, and features[edit]

From the A-pillar forward, the Raptor has a composite hood and fenders different from other F-150s and is bereft of the blue oval badge in the grille. SVT widened the track by 7 inches, and so its 5.5-foot box is unique to the Raptor as well.[20] The Raptor's height is 2 inches over a standard 4-wheel drive Supercrew. It also features new, internal bypass shocks, designed by Fox Racing Shox.

The Raptor has new leaf springs and shocks, new front upper- and lower-A-arms, and a wider, thicker-walled rear axle. It's the first Ford with hill-descent control and comes with an electronic differential locker that lets the driver keep it locked at high speeds when the Raptor's Off Road Mode is engaged. Off Road Mode is a feature unique to the Raptor which allows more controlled, aggressive driving while in situations where increased traction and braking are necessary. The Raptor's Off Road Mode allows ABS, AdvanceTrac RSC(roll stability control) and traction control to be completely switched off giving the driver total control over the driving experience. Off Road Mode also changes the Raptor's throttle sensitivity and transmission shift points causing a more linear power and torque curve for low traction situations.

Towing capacity is up to 8,000 pounds with a 1,770-pound payload (SuperCrew only).[21] Interior changes include high-bolster seats, a special steering wheel, a redesigned center console and auxiliary switches connected to pre-wired pass though leads allowing ease of aftermarket product installation. Ford originally promised a value price and a multi-year run—final pricing came in at $42,000.00 for 2010.
