Horseheads crash victims fun-loving golfing buddies - Elmira Star-Gazette

The two retirees were headed there Saturday morning when a tractor-trailer and their Ford Ranger pickup collided at Westinghouse and Watkins roads, killing both men. “These two guys were the most personal men you would ever want to meet, joking all the time and having a great time,” said friend and fellow golfer Bill Dominikoski, of Horseheads. Dominikoski said he worked part time at the course from 2000 to 2011, and was a starter, ranger and ran the restaurant there. He said Painton, 72, of Elmira, was formerly the assistant pro there. “He was a great golfer and good instructor,” Dominikoski said. Dominikoski said the two men had a regular 7 a. m. tee time every Saturday or Sunday, and he would usually tee off right before them each weekend. They were two of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet,” Dominikoski said. He said Fossaseca, who was 76 and lived in Elmira, was a year older than him and they both attended Elmira Free Academy. Fossaseca was the driver of the pickup truck in Saturday’s collision, and Painton was his passenger. Source: www.stargazette.com

The Lexus was ahead of the BMW as both cars closed in on a third vehicle "that was traveling at or about the speed limit of 35 mph," Mike Jachles of Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue, said. The BMW struck the back of the third car before hitting the Lexus on its passenger side, causing "a chain reaction that pushed vehicle three off the road and into a pole," Jachles said. The BMW and Lexus crossed Southeast 10th Street into eastbound traffic and struck a Hyundai sedan and a Ford Ranger pickup. Those crashes damaged three other vehicles parked in front of homes on the south side of Southeast 10th Street, Jachles said. A 3-year-old boy and his parents, who were in the third car, were taken to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale and treated for injuries that were serious but not life threatening. Muniz, the BMW driver, and a passenger were treated at Broward Health North in Deerfield Beach for injuries that were not life threatening, according to Jachles. Joseph and a front seat passenger were not injured, but a 14-year-old girl in the backseat of the Lexus, taken to Broward Health Medical Center, was in critical condition on Sunday. • Ford Considers Challenges of Compact F-100/Ranger Pickup ...

When Ford ended production of the Ranger in December 2011, America lost its last truly compact pickup—an anachronism, untouched by the decade-long trend of ballooning trucks. While the Toyota Tacoma, the Chevy Colorado, and the Nissan Frontier grew in mass and capability, the overall size of the compact-truck segment shriveled. But Ford thinks it may have the situation figured out—or, at least, untangled.

“The overlap with full-size trucks in size, price, and fuel economy made no sense for the consumer,” Doug Scott, the marketing manager for Ford trucks explained to us at the Chicago auto show. “It led to the death of the shrinking of the compact segment from two million trucks to 250,000 last year.” Blame, if you must, the usual focus groups and feature creep for the ever-expanding trucks. Even more than with cars, every new pickup generation must be better than ever, so more powerful, capable of carrying more payload, and have a higher tow rating.

Is there any remaining consumer interest in a compact pickup that’s actually compact? “You bet,” Scott says. “We’ve spent a lot of time with customers, and we know there is a market for a true compact truck. But you have to have—and we have a pretty good handle on it, we think—a significant difference in size, price, and fuel economy. We think we know what it looks like.” In short, it would need about 1000 pounds of payload capacity, 3000 pounds of towing, and a dramatic reduction in fuel consumption. Does it need to be a traditional body-on-frame truck? “No,” Scott answers. The target consumers really don’t care, as long as a car-based pickup is durable and can haul what they need. Add a reasonable sticker, and “that formula will work.”

Should a genuinely small Ranger or F-100 like this be approved for production, Ford’s strategy would be at odds with General Motors’, which turned to its global product portfolio for the new Chevy Colorado. Designed for countries where there are no full-size trucks, the Colorado is roughly 90 percent of a Silverado in size; GM execs have said that the Colorado will deliver about 20-percent-better fuel economy than its larger sibling. Ford looked at its own global pickup, called the Ranger (pictured above), and concluded the overlap with the F-150 would just be too vast. Just adding a four-cylinder engine or a diesel isn’t enough. The only sensible option, in Ford’s view, is to do something very different. It looks like Fiat, too, is considering something similar—rumors circulated this week that the company is considering bringing the car-based Strada to the U.S. as a Ram, something of a 21st-century El Camino.

Road Test: Ford F-150 FX4 SuperCrew 4×4 EcoBoost V6 Photos and Info: 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Photos and Info: 2014 Toyota Tundra

This is not to say that the future of an F-100 is rock solid—far from it. The truck’s sales would need to justify the billion-plus-dollars it costs to engineer any new vehicle, a task made even harder by the tiny window in which prices could be set: Too close to the F-150, which starts at about $24,500 before discounts, and many shoppers will just opt for the bigger of the two. But there’s also a floor on just how cheap a new car can be in the U.S., with the most basic of Fiestas stickering at $14,000. While we’re piling on the difficulties, that Fiesta is built in Mexico, where labor costs are a fraction of what they are in the States; a pickup would have to be built here to avoid the 25-percent “Chicken tax” our government levies on imported light trucks. “The challenge,” Scott adds, is “making a business case out of it that makes sense. We’re still working on it.”

  • Ford Ranger Review - Research New & Used Ford Ranger ...

They say that in the event of Armageddon, the only thing to survive will be cockroaches. Well, there's a good chance you'd see some old Ford Rangers cruising around, too. This compact pickup truck soldiered on with relatively few revisions for nearly three decades. Of course, there were styling and interior overhauls over the decades, but the platform and most mechanicals underneath it all were practically Jurassic. Even those styling and interior updates dated back to the 1990s.

Older Rangers aren't quite as out of date compared to competitors of similar age. And given its wide choice of trim styles and lower pricing than comparable Japanese rivals, a well-maintained late-model Ford Ranger could be a good choice for a used pickup, provided you don't need a lot of passenger capacity or horsepower. But if you're looking for a relatively new used compact or midsize pickup, the Ford Ranger pales in comparison to other trucks with their more powerful engines, roomier crew-cab body styles and greater overall refinement.

Used Ford Ranger ModelsThe most recent generation of the Ford Ranger was produced from 2001 through 2011 and typically came in four different flavors: XL, XLT, Sport, and the off-road-oriented FX4. Depending on the year, there were also the monochromatic Edge, sporty STX and sound system-centered Tremor. Only standard and extended cab body styles were offered, as there was still no crew cab version.

Engine selection consisted of a 2.3-liter four-cylinder, a 3.0-liter V6 (until 2009) and a 4.0-liter V6. Output of the smaller engines varied slightly depending on year, with the 2.3 making 135-143 horsepower and the 3.0 making 148-154 hp. The 4.0 made 207 hp. Transmission choices included a five-speed manual and a five-speed automatic for all engines, though initially the 4.0-liter V6 came only with the automatic.

Although nimble on- and off-road due to its true compact size, even this latest version of the Ranger was seriously dated in terms of features and available body styles. While its midsize rivals offered roomy crew-cab (four-door) models, more modern features and much more powerful V6 engines, the Ranger made do with standard and extended-cab configurations only, and relatively low-tech power plants.

The second generation of the Ranger ran from 1993 through 2000. Styling was less blocky than the first-gen truck and the cabin was likewise updated with less angular forms. Standard and extended cab body styles were offered, but they were joined by a stylish, flareside bed version dubbed the Splash. Under the hood was the expected choice of a four- or six-cylinder engine. Notable changes throughout this generation are the availability of four-wheel antilock brakes in 1995, a five-speed automatic transmission (versus four-speed) for V6 models in '97 and freshened styling for '98.

Introduced for 1983, the Ford Ranger started life as a standard-cab, four-cylinder compact pickup truck with a choice of two bed lengths. The mid-'80s saw the introduction of the extended-cab body style known as the "SuperCab," which offered jump seats that were best left to kids. The Ranger continued through the early '90s with minor upgrades to the powertrains and small cosmetic changes.

Could compact trucks be on the verge of catching a second wind in the U.S.?

After several years of saying that the Ranger wouldn't be replaced in the U.S. by a new compact truck, Ford appears to be having a change of heart—and at the very least is investigating the possibility of a new small pickup.

MUST READ: 10 Cars Most Likely To Get Ticketed

Ford marketing manager Dave Scott recently revealed to USA Today that Ford is now giving serious consideration to an entry-level compact pickup for the U.S. market. But in order to succeed in the market—and not cannibalize sales from the highly profitable F-Series lineup—such a truck would need to be smaller than GM's new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon mid-size pickups.

Smaller, cheaper, more fuel-efficient—a potential opportunity

"We're looking at it. We think we could sell a compact truck that's more like the size of the old Ranger, that gets six or eight more miles per gallon (than a full-size truck), is $5,000 or $6,000 less, and that we could build in the U.S. to avoid the tariff on imported trucks," said Scott to the paper.

The current Ranger that Ford sells overseas is simply too close in size to the F-Series. At about six inches narrower, or just a few inches to a foot shorter than a comparable F-150 style, it's surprisingly closely aligned in size, yet less capable. The same is perhaps true for those GM mid-size trucks, which are quite close both in size and price to their full-size brandmates—although it'll be some months before sales figures on those new trucks can be judged.

    2015 Ford F-150

    2015 Ford F-150

    Enlarge Photo

Such a rival could potentially be designed off a uni-body platform, like that of the Ford Transit Connect. That would make it a front/all-wheel-drive platform, but the Honda Ridgeline has done well with that layout—and a new 2016 Ridgeline is due next year. It's also possible that the model could borrow pieces from both the Transit Connect and the new full-size Transit vans. And with a move to an aluminum-intensive body for 2015, the F-150 is arguably more expensive to build, which leaves more room for a pickup price leader.

READ: Peugeot Citroen Could Return To The U.S. In Early 2020s

Tough to gauge the market at this point

The Ranger fell from more than 200,000 annual U.S. sales in the early 2000s—when it was a very popular fleet vehicle as well—down to less than 75,000 annually for the last five years of its run (production ended in 2011). Critically, that plunge in sales may have been due more to Ford's failure to keep the Ranger lineup updated than to a sharp decline in demand, as sales of the Nissan Frontier or the Toyota Tacoma (the segment's recent top-seller) didn't fall by nearly the same amount in that period.

Does that support the idea that there's still a market for the Ranger, from those who want a less cumbersome truck? Sounds like, for Ford, it's a matter of getting the numbers to work out—and we hope they do.

What a difference a year makes.

Throughout the long lead-up to the launch of its aluminum-bodied 2015 Ford F-150 full-size pickup, Ford has maintained that it sees no market for smaller pickup trucks.

But now, the company may be changing its tune.

DON'T MISS: Will Smaller Pickups Be More Popular Than Carmakers Expect?

In an interview with USA Today, truck marketing manager David Scott said that the company is evaluating its current and future trucks throughout the world for a smaller pickup that could be adapted for the U.S. market.

    2015 Ford F-150

    2015 Ford F-150

    Enlarge Photo

Importantly, he said that the mid-size Ford Ranger pickup now sold outside the U.S. would not be that vehicle.

That Ranger is a much larger truck than the Ranger compact pickup whose production ended almost three years ago. It's "90 percent of the F-150 size," he said.

ALSO SEE: Pickup Truck Gas Mileage, 2015 And Beyond: 30 MPG Highway Is Next Hurdle

Instead, Ford appears to be considering reintroducing a true compact pickup truck.

Such a vehicle would be a segment smaller than the current Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma mid-size trucks, which are now being joined in the market by the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon--also mid-sized.

    2015 Chevrolet Colorado Z71

    2015 Chevrolet Colorado Z71

    Enlarge Photo

Scott said the target was a true compact pickup that would achieve fuel-efficiency ratings fully 6 to 8 miles per gallon higher than the F-150, presumably using four-cylinder engines only.

And the base price would have to be $5,000 to $6,000 lower than the F-150, to avoid cannibalization.

MORE: Diesel Pickup Trucks From Chevy, Ford, Nissan, Ram: Ultimate Guide

With its aluminum cab and pickup bed, the 2015 F-150 is thought to be considerably more expensive for Ford to manufacture than its steel predecessors--even at volumes of half a million or so a year.

A future Ranger-size compact pickup from Ford would likely have unibody construction, rather than the separate frame and body of all full-size pickups.

    2014 Honda Ridgeline Sport

    2014 Honda Ridgeline Sport

    Enlarge Photo

Only the Honda Ridgeline uses that construction today, although pickups of previous decades based on the Dodge Omni/Plymouth Horizon and the Volkswagen Rabbit (first-generation Golf) were built that way.

That offers the possibility that a pickup model could be derived from the new Ford Transit Connect, based on the compact platform now used by the Ford Focus, C-Max, and Escape.

  • All-New Ford Ranger Compact Pickup Truck Revealed but it's ...

The wraps are off the all-new for 2011, Ford Ranger pickup truck which makes its worldwide debut at this week's Australian International Motor Show in Sydney before going on sale in 180 markets around the world but not -you guessed it- in the USA.

Like its predecessor, Ford's new Ranger was developed in cooperation with Mazda, which will also unveil its version of the compact pickup truck called the BT-50 in Sydney.

The new Ranger moves a step closer to passenger cars in terms of styling, interior appointments as well as technology features. It will be available in three different cab body styles, 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrains, two ride heights and four series choices.

It is powered by a choice of two new common rail Ford Duratorq TDCi diesels, a 2.2-liter TDCi four-cylinder unit with 150HP and 375Nm [277 lb-ft], or a 3.2-liter TDCi inline-five rated at 200HP and 470Nm [347 lb-ft], and new six-speed automatic and manual transmissions.

The 4WD models are equipped with an electronically controlled transfer case that allows drivers to shift from 4x2 to 4x4 through an electronic switch located on the console, while low range gearing can also be enabled.

Ford said that the cargo box of the new Double Cab is more than 100mm wider than before - 1,549mm long by 511mm high and with a maximum cargo width of 1,560mm. Volume is rated at 1.21 cubic meters.

All Ranger models will come equipped with a new Electronic Stability Program (ESP) system that includes four-wheel traction control, yaw control and roll-over mitigation, as standard. Other new technologies include Rear Park Assist and new Rearview Camera system, plus the availability of side curtain airbags on all cab styles for the first time.

Stephen Odell, chairman and CEO, Ford of Europe, said: "The new Ranger is an exciting and dynamic vehicle that will undoubtedly raise the bar in the pickup market. The scope of its capability and technology are further evidence of how powerful the One Ford initiative is in helping us globally to develop a whole range of all-new class-leading vehicles. We look forward to bringing new Ranger to European customers by 2012 and I am confident it will exceed their expectations."

The new Ford Ranger will be built at three sites with series production scheduled to begin next summer, initially in Rayong, Thailand. Ford said it is also planning to manufacture the new pickup truck at its plants in Argentina and South Africa.
