Report: Police car U-turn led to North Port crash - Sarasota Herald-Tribune

Charles Ayres, 45, remained at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte for treatment Friday, city spokesman Josh Taylor said. Norman Boisvert, 48, the North Port solid waste refuse equipment operator who was driving the truck, was released from the hospital the afternoon of the crash. Ayres made an improper U-turn in front of Boisvert, causing the collision, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office crash report. Ayres told a responding deputy that he was driving a police-owned black, 2014 Ford Taurus west on Price Boulevard when he saw a U-Haul truck illegally driving in the center of the roadway to pass traffic. He then turned left, making a U-turn in front of a city-owned white, 2014 Ford F550 traveling at about 35 mph and driven by Boisvert. Boisvert said he saw the Taurus, hit his truck's brakes and veered left. But the truck crashed into the sedan's front left tire and fender. The Taurus rotated to the left and then its driver's side struck the truck's passenger side, according to the crash report. Boisvert has been a city employee since 2012, Taylor said. Ayres has been with the police force since 1997. EARLIER: The city employee and police officer injured in a two-vehicle wreck Thursday morning have been identified. After 49 years operating Coun's C Club, 1315 County C, Darrell and Audrey Counard have sold their business and closed the doors Thursday night. The couple, who celebrate their 57th wedding anniversary this July, plan to spend more time at a cabin near Wausaukee – a cabin Darrell said he built using timbers salvaged from a barn in Brussels. The project will prevent “catastrophic failure” of the town’s emergency communications network, which currently relies on T-1 lines or copper telephone lines, considered antiquated technology, Mansfield said. The upgrade will allow the town’s current fiber-optic network to connect into the Holt Hill and Wood Hill emergency communications radio repeaters. Mansfield said it’s the “final piece” of a multi-year project to upgrade the department’s communications system. There have been no upgrades to the fire side of the house in 20 years. ” He said the upgrades should be in place by the end of the year. Spending $402,393 to lease computers for school and town workers.
