Raptors capture second straight Class AA boys soccer title - Charleston Post Courier

Academic Magnet scored three second-half goals and won its second consecutive AA boys soccer state championship, beating Indian Land, 4-1, at River Bluff High School on Saturday. The title was the school’s third in four years — all three victories over Indian Land, who lost in the finals for the fourth consecutive season. Senior Reece Moore scored three goals to lead the Raptors, putting a cap on a 17-4 season. Both teams had minimal scoring chances in the first 30 minutes of the game, though early play was physical. Indian Land’s Jordan Szustwal left the field midway through the half with a bloody nose, drawing major protests from Warriors’ coach Adam Cole. The Raptors broke the scoring ice in the 34th minute of play when Moore headed in a perfect corner kick from Dylan Robinson for a 1-0 lead. However, Indian Land answered that score a minute later when Szustwal took a pass from Justin Penn and beat Raptors’ keeper Aaron Thornton for the tying score. Just before halftime, Cole received a yellow card on the Indian Land sideline, but the teams headed to halftime tied at one. Daniel was in Lexington, Ky. , last Thursday to appear on a radio show, and while in town, he stopped by Kentucky and visited with head coach Mark Stoops. “I was just in town and stopped over there and said high to everybody,” he said. Daniel did talk the same day with USC recruiters Kirk Botkin and Steve Spurrier Jr. He attended USC’s Showcase camp earlier this month. He said he will not take any more visits prior to his announcement. Defensive back Marlon Character of Atlanta has not been able to make it to USC this month, but that hasn’t hurt the Gamecocks’ position with him. “There’s something about South Carolina lately that’s been catching my eye,” Character said. He said he will visit USC within the next two weeks and that a commitment is possible on that visit. Character has been to Alabama, Georgia and Louisville for camps and visited Auburn on Thursday. Stingrays rally to beat Reading, 3-2, in Game 7 - Charleston Post Courier

In a season full of comebacks, the South Carolina Stingrays had the comeback of the season. With their season on the line and trailing by two goals with 20 minutes to play, the Stingrays rallied for three third period goals to beat the Reading Royals, 3-2, in Game 7 of the ECHL’s East Division Kelly Cup semifinal series. Joe Devin scored two goals, including the game-winner with 3:28 to play, to cap an improbable comeback for the Stingrays. It was only the second Game 7 in the club’s 22-year history, the last coming in the Kelly Cup finals against Alaska in 2009. The Stingrays won that game, 4-2. With the victory, the Stingrays will take on the Florida Everblades in the best-of-seven... The Stingrays outplayed the Royals for large chunks of the first two periods, but had nothing to show for it, trailing 2-0 going into the third period after goals from Jordan Heywood and David Marshall. It wasn’t that pace or that urgency that you’d expect in a Game 7. We talked about this being it. We’ve got 20 minutes to play and let’s lay it all out there and play with some urgency. The Stingrays played with plenty of pace and urgency in the final 20 minutes.
