2014 Ford F250 Super Duty Crew Cab Expert Review

    By KBB.com Editors

    KBB Expert Rating: 7.6

The need for power and might in full-size pickup will likely cease when either gravity is reversed or the planet goes dark. Until such time, the 2014 Ford Super Duty line of pickups will continue to flourish anywhere big jobs need gettin' done. Although the Super Duty faces stiff competition from Chevy and Ram, the imports have yet to stake a claim in the world of three-quarter and one-ton trucks. As such, the Super Duty has earned a pretty loyal following, but to win over Ram and Chevy converts Ford sweetens the deal with a powerful line of gasoline and diesel engines, best in class conventional towing and payload, plus a number of innovative features aimed at improving comfort and safety.

    You'll Like This Car If...

If you're looking for a powerful truck that is also capable, comfortable and even downright luxurious, the 2014 Ford Super Duty serves up all three attributes in a vehicle that is not overly ornate or cartoonish.

You May Not Like This Car If...

If you find yourself liking the look and feel of a full size Super Duty, but you don't really need its towing or payload capacity, the half-ton Ford F-150 offers the same styling and features in a very capable vehicle with a much lower price tag. Manual transmission fans will have to look to RAM to meet their needs.

In the never ending battle for whose truck has the biggest numbers, Ford trumps Chevy and Ram this year by nudging the 2014 Ford Super Duty pickup to in impressive 18,500 pound conventional tow rating and an equally big 7,260 pound maximum payload capacity.

Driving Impressions That the 2014 Ford Super Duty has an abundance of horsepower and torque is not in question. How it holds up over time, however, is equally important. To ensure the...

... Super Duty doesn't shake itself apart, Ford includes each truck with a fully-boxed frame, thicker crossmembers and beefed-up C-Channel frame rails. The stiffer the chassis, the less prone to flexing and twisting, helping the Super Duty not only accomplish its towing and hauling tasks, but keeping to a minimum the number of squeaks and rattles that develop in the cabin over time. Despite its massive size and weight, the 2014 Ford Super Duty is quite stable and surprisingly easy to maneuver. The feel from the steering wheel is heavy, but direct with no play or vagueness. Toss in the available 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel and the Super Duty ups its conventional tow rating to an astounding 18,500 pounds, and 24,700 using a 5th wheel (F-450).

SYNC WITH MYFORD TOUCHFord's SYNC is more than just an easy way to organize music, navigation and cell phone calls – it's an important safety feature that lets the driver do all the aforementioned tasks while keeping their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. By reading incoming messages, SYNC can help avoid the distraction caused when trying to text and drive.

INTERIOR ACCOUTREMENTSA heated steering wheel and cooling front seats are features expected of a premium luxury sedan, but finding them inside the 2014 Ford Super Duty trucks is an unexpected pleasure.

As you might expect in a vehicle whose trims and prices range so widely – from just over $31,000 for a basic F-250 XL trim to nearly $70,000 for an F-450 Platinum edition – the 2014 Ford Super Duty's cabin ranges from Spartan to luxurious. In regular-cab form, seating is limited to three passengers. Crew cab and super cab models can seat up to six passengers, or five when equipped with two individual front seats and a center console. Lower-trim models have basic vinyl seating that can take a beating and clean up easily, while premium leather can be had on the other end of the Super Duty spectrum.

    Exterior

2014 Ford F250 Super Duty Crew Cab photo

Ford's Super Duty trucks exude their big and brawny nature, from the massive front grille to the equally large tailgate stamped with "SUPER DUTY" on the bottom. These trucks can be configured with 6-and-3/4-foot or 8-foot beds, and with regular, super cab, or crew cabins. F-450 models come with two pairs of rear wheels that enable it to carry extreme loads. It's safe to call even the smallest of the Super Duty models large. A regular-cab model, which is fitted with an 8-foot bed and qualifies as the shortest, is 227.6 inches in length, while the longest comes in at 263 inches. At nearly 22 feet, that latter model is nearly seven feet longer than a Honda Civic. If you plan to park this truck in your garage, take some measurements first.

    Notable Equipment

    Standard Equipment

As mentioned with the interior, what you get in your Super Duty varies greatly on trim. On the lower end of the spectrum, XL models are sparse and definitely work-oriented with heavy-duty vinyl seats, manual-control air conditioning, and an audio system limited to an AM/FM radio with two speakers. A CD player is optional in that trim, as are cruise control and power windows. The standard engine on F-250 and 350 models is Ford's 6.2-liter gasoline V8, while F-450 models get the 6.7-liter V8 diesel. Upper trims have equipment such as heated and cooled premium leather seats, a navigation system and a Sony premium audio system. All Super Duty trucks feature trailer sway control and roll stability control.

    Optional Equipment

Optional on all F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks is the 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 turbodiesel whose power just might give gravity a run for its money. Other options vary with trim level, and many are geared toward the duties for which you plan to use your truck. An extra-heavy-duty alternator is available, as is an engine block heater. Models with diesel engines can be equipped with a Live Drive Power Takeoff to run auxiliary equipment such as a snowplow, truck lift, or cement mixer. Tow-prep packages for traditional hitches and 5th-wheel setups are available, and Super Duty trucks with the diesel engine have an exhaust brake feature like the kind used in big rigs when descending steep grades.

    Under the Hood

2014 Ford F250 Super Duty Crew Cab Engine photo

The 2014 Super Duty is available with two V8 engines, a 6.2-liter gasoline unit that is the base powerplant or, for those needing maximum power, a 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel. Both are fitted to a 6-speed automatic transmission and can be had in 2-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive. Models with the gasoline engine run on regular unleaded and are also E85 compatible. An option package can make the Super Duty's gasoline engine capable of running on compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), but does not include the fuel tanks or other equipment. In diesel models, Ford says nitrogen oxide levels are reduced more than 80 percent vs. previous generations. The EPA does not give fuel-economy ratings for either of these engines.

    Pricing Notes

There's a 2014 Ford Super Duty truck to meet a variety of budgets. At the low end of the spectrum, a 2-wheel-drive F-250 XL has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting just over $31,000. On the other end, a Platinum edition F-450 starts at over $68,000 and can cross the $70,000 mark with options. On F-250 and F-350 models, the diesel engine is roughly $8,000 extra (it's standard on the F-450). At its base price, the Super Duty is competitive with its Ram and GMC/Chevy rivals. Before buying, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price to see what other contractors in your area are paying for the 2014 Ford Super Duty. Looking down the road, the Super Duty's resale value also is roughly in line with its competitors and varies slightly depending on model and cab configuration. Models equipped with the diesel engine tend to have a slightly higher resale value than those with the gasoline engine.

2015 Ford F250 Super Duty Crew Cab Expert Review

    By Keith Buglewicz

    KBB Expert Rating: 7.5

Sometimes you just need to tow a 5th-wheel trailer, yank a house off its foundation, or pull that pesky canyon closed. For that, you need a heavy-duty pickup like the Ford Super Duty. A new 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel offers up 440 hp and an incredible 860 lb-ft of torque, the most in its class.

The more powerful engine is a direct response to competition from the Chevrolet Silverado and Ram 1500, both of which have ramped up their trucks' capabilities. The Super Duty has a loyal following that could never be seduced by the competition, but these improvements put the Ford trucks back on top in capability, and may even convert a few Ram and Chevy owners in the process.

    You'll Like This Car If...

If you're looking for a full-size, super-capable pickup that's also comfortable and – dare we say – luxurious, the 2015 Ford Super Duty serves it up.

You May Not Like This Car If...

If you like the big-truck look, but don't need or want that much capability, then the half-ton Ford F-150 offers similar styling and features with a much lower price tag. Manual transmission fans will have to look to RAM to meet their needs.

With its upgraded engine, the 2015 Ford Super Duty handily trumps Chevy and Ram. With the new engine, stronger frame, and upgraded towing package, the 2015 F-350 can tow up to 26,500 pounds. Not enough? The even bigger 2015 F-450 can haul an amazing 31,200 pounds.

Driving the F250 Super Duty Crew Cab

Driving Impressions The name "Super Duty" sounds like something out of a comic book, and its capabilities put it in the league of superheroes. The Power Stroke diesel engine gets more power...

... and torque this year, allowing the big-daddy Ford F-450 to tow and haul a combined weight of 40,000 pounds.

But, to paraphrase a comic, with great torque comes great chassis strength. The new Super Duties have that, too. The 2015 F-350 now has an optional high-capacity towing package that strengthens the chassis to the point where it's as tough as last year's F-450. The new 2015 F-450 adds industrial-strength 19.5-inch wheels and tires, plus an upgraded suspension and an increased capacity for towing a gooseneck trailer.

Yet this is no uncivilized work truck – add the new King Ranch trim and you're surrounded by soft leather and premium features.

INTERIOR REFINEMENTA full-size heavy-duty cargo-and-trailer hauler isn't where you'd think to find luxury, but with soft leather, a heated steering wheel, and cooling front seats, the 2015 Ford Super Duty truck is an unexpected pleasure.

Chassis and engine improvements aside, the Ford Super Duty trucks are largely carryover when it comes to standard equipment. Base XL models are strictly for work, offering vinyl seats, manual-control air conditioning, and an audio system limited to an AM/FM radio with two speakers. All Super Duty trucks feature trailer sway control and roll stability control. On the F-250 and F-350, the standard 6.2-liter V8 remains standard, while the F-450 gets the new Power Stroke 6.7-liter diesel V8. Step into nicer trim levels and you'll get heated and cooled seats, a navigation system, and an upgraded audio system.

    Optional Equipment

If you're hauling or towing with your 2015 F-250 or F-350, then step up to the 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel V8. Other options vary with trim level, and many are geared toward the duties you have planned for your truck. The F-350 has a new heavy-duty towing package that makes it practically as strong as last year's F-450. Models with diesel engines can be equipped with a Live Drive Power Takeoff to run auxiliary equipment such as a snowplow, truck lift, or cement mixer, and the diesels can be equipped with a "Jake brake," just like a full-size semi.

    Pricing Notes

With a wide variety of models, bed and cab sizes, and trim levels, there's a 2015 Ford Super Duty truck to meet virtually any budget.

The least expensive 2-wheel-drive F-250 XL with the shortest bed and regular cab has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting at about $33,000. Step up to the F-250 Crew Cab long bed in Platinum trim, and you're looking at about $57,000. The F-350 and F-450 are even higher, with the F-450 Platinum at around $70,000. The diesel in the F-250 or F-350 adds an additional $8,000. Those high-sounding prices are still competitive with rivals from Chevrolet and Ram.

Before buying, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price to see what other contractors in your area are paying for the 2015 Ford Super Duty. If you're thinking resale, think diesel, as those models tend to have better resale then their gasoline counterparts.

  • 2008 Ford F-250 Super Duty 4x4 Crew Cab Diesel V-8 - Short ...

With the discontinuation of the Ford GT, we wondered, What's the best vehicle in Ford's lineup? After trying out the 2008 F-250 Super Duty, we're thinking a case could be made for this pickup.

When put up against its classmates, the heavy-duty Dodge Ram and GM pickups, the redesigned 2008 Super Duty brings home an impressive report card.

Those whose fantasies include 18 wheels and 13-speed gearboxes will be attracted to the $6895 Power Stroke 6.4-liter, 32-valve diesel V-8, which, when ordered with the King Ranch trim package, requires a mandatory $1490 automatic transmission. So equipped, the F-250 boasts a serious 650 pound-feet of torque at 2000 rpm and 350 horsepower at 3000 rpm, numbers that equal the power output of the latest 6.7-liter Cummins turbo-diesel from Dodge and nearly match the 660 pound-feet of torque and 365 horsepower from GM's 6.6-liter Duramax diesel.Ford's Power Stroke is a redesigned version of last year's 6.0-liter V-8 diesel that was plagued with engine-management and fuel-injector issues. Henry's disciples assure us those problems have been solved in the largely new twin-turbocharged 6.4-liter version, and in our hands for testing, the truck never once hiccuped.

Pumping diesel into the 30.5-gallon tank (a 38-gallon unit is offered with certain wheelbases) and the subsequent stinky residue that clings to your hands is the worst part of the diesel experience. Ford's latest oil burner offers excellent throttle response and lights quickly. The traditional clatter of compression ignition is muted-we recorded a carlike 69 dBA at 70 mph. From rest there is a trace of turbo lag, but it doesn't take long for the two turbochargers nestled in the V-8's valley to begin to force highly compressed air down the engine's throat. Once the mighty giant awakens, it honks the colossal 8120-pound truck forward as if it were being shot off an aircraft carrier. More than four tons of Ford fun get to 60 mph in 8.7 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 16.8 seconds at 84 mph. Of greater interest to potential owners is the 12,500-pound towing capacity.

Our scales weren't up to Super Duty duty-they tilt at a mere 6000 pounds-so we headed to the local truck scales twice (the second visit was to assuage our disbelief). From behind the wheel the truck seemed solid. The slow steering (4.1 turns lock-to-lock) lent an elephantine quality, but it didn't feel like four tons. Piloting the F-250 was more a matter of managing 246.2 inches, and huge exterior mirrors kept us from pulling a Captain Hazelwood. Ride quality, despite shiny 20-inch wheels and two solid axles that look as if they'd been pulled off a railroad car, was agreeable-indeed, a huge improvement over that of the previous Super Duty.

Comfort was a clear priority inside the new truck. Our tester wore the King Ranch package, which adds baseball-glove-like leather seats among other sensual luxuries. No other Ford product is as well thought out and uncompromised, and that makes the price of nearly $60,000 at least understandable-excellence is rarely cheap. So what if the Super Duty breaks the bank? Viewed through a rearview mirror, this chrome behemoth looks like a bank.
