Arrest made in fatal hit and run - WIAT 42

(WIAT) — UPDATE(X7): Canty was released from Shelby County Jail on August 9, 2015. UPDATE(X6): Michael Terry Canty III, of Tuscaloosa, is a repeat DUI offender according to the Alacourt website. Canty plead guilty to three DUIs: one in 2005, one in 2009 and one in 2012. Canty was convicted of two DUIs: one in 2009 and one in 2011. In 2011, Canty was also convicted for open container violation. According to a media release from the Birmingham Police Department, investigators have obtained warrants against Michael Terry Canty III, 31, of Tuscaloosa in connection with the fatal hit and run. UPDATE (X4): A suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal hit and run accident, Lt. Scott Thurmond with the Birmingham Police Department said. As a result of the tips received and the tireless work by our Traffic Homicide Unit and Homicide Unit an arrest was made today. Once investigators present this case to the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office and a warrant is obtained the suspect’s name and mugshot will be released. UPDATE (X3): A description of the suspect vehicle in the fatal hit and run that happened early Wednesday morning on Highway 280 has been released. A bicyclist was riding his bicycle on a Goshen city bike path at the intersection of Indiana and Wilden Avenues at 1:28 p. m. Saturday, according to Goshen police. Lanae Sue Nielsen, 49, of Denver, was coming to a stop in a 2006 Toyota Sienna behind a semi that was turning into GMT Corporation, traveling eastbound. Alex Michael Kluter, 21, of Allison, was also eastbound in a 2010 Chevrolet Aveo and had glanced down at his climate control panel to adjust the air flow for the air conditioner. He was too close to the Sienna, though, and rear ended it. Nielsen thought she could pull away as she saw the Aveo approach without stopping to lessen the impact. July 19 : At 2:45 a. m. , police responded to a two-vehicle accident in the 200 block of West Bremer Avenue. Bontrager, 20, of Waverly, was traveling westbound in a 2006 Pontiac Grand Am, following a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Marvin J. Raber, 18, of Waverly. Bontrager was apparently not paying attention and following too close to Raber, and after they crossed Second Street, the Grand Am rear ended the Silverado, going underneath the truck bed, totalling the car and causing minor damage to the truck. There were no injuries, and Bontrager was cited for following too close, while a subsequent investigation led to both Bontrager and Raber as well as Freddie D.
