Lee County fatalities frustrate traffic authorities - The News-Press

Lee County's road fatality total stands at 52 mid-way into 2015. If the road carnage continues apace, the county could see more than 100 traffic deaths for the first time since 2007, when it recorded 106 fatalities. For one area traffic professional, Jay Anderson, executive director of Stay Alive. The most recent deaths include two people not wearing seat belts who died in a crash Friday on state Route 82 in Lehigh Acres that involved a driver who ran a stop sign, and two motorcyclists who died in crashes Saturday connected to driving... "Realistically, all the research shows it is all about poor choices," Anderson said. "Despite talk about weather conditions, that stop sign has always been there," he said of the Lehigh Acres crash. "We chose to speed, we chose to not wear seat belts. We chose to drive distracted," he said. Database: 2015 Lee County Traffic Deaths. Anderson, who's organization provides safe driving classes, said that he was trying to impress upon those who take his course about choices. He said traffic experts get frustrated with the continuing loss of life. What more can we do. Traffic laws are not suggestions, they are laws," he said.
