Sacramento International Airport officials have entered negotiations with Uber and Lyft to allow their drivers to serve airport users, a move that would end a growing cat-and-mouse game between the airport and non-permitted drivers. Sacramento would become the latest of a handful of airports reversing its stance on the controversial, app-based transportation companies, acknowledging them as major players in modern transportation. Uber, Lyft and other “sharing economy” companies – now referred to as “transportation network companies” – make use of private individuals conducting taxi service in their personal cars. San Francisco International, which once publicly banned the companies from airport grounds, was among the first airports nationally last year to sign an agreement allowing drivers from Uber and other companies on airport grounds in exchange for a... Oakland International Airport also is in negotiations with app-based ride-share companies to allow their drivers on site. I flinch every time I get into a taxi. I have been dissed, ignored, waylaid, and mistreated every which way by taxi drivers. If you are African American or live on Chicago’s South or West Side, you know the story. My biggest taxi meltdown came when I hailed a Yellow downtown, late for a meeting. It’s called “hailing while black. A recent survey found that 66 percent of African-American Chicago residents believe that taxi cabs “deliberately refuse to pick up blacks. ” Four of every 10 blacks surveyed said they do not use the city’s taxi services. Even caucasians who participated in the survey agreed that taxis discriminate against African-Americans. UberX, the company’s low-cost car option, connects riders and drivers to economic opportunity. Its drivers are blanketing Chicago. No more hailing while black: 54 percent of UberX trips in the city of Chicago “begin or end in an area deemed as underserved” by taxis and public transportation, the company says. In June, UberX drivers connected more than 500,000 trips on the city’s South and West Sides, according to spokesperson Brooke Anderson. The service is blasting through Chicago’s job deserts. 3 dead after ejected from back of pickup truck in Kihei - Honolulu Star-Advertiser

Three men who were riding in the bed of a pickup truck died Saturday night after a motor vehicle collision in Kihei. The crash happened just after 9:30 p. m. when a blue Dodge pickup truck was making a left turn from Mokulele Highway into the entrance of Maui Raceway Park, police said. The truck was struck by a white Toyota pickup truck traveling north on Mokulele Highway. The three men were ejected from the bed of the blue pickup and were pronounced dead at the scene. The men have been identified as 25-year-old Howard Pruse of Waiehu, 51-year-old Eric Oguma of Waiehu and 27-year-old Tyree Kamaunu of Waihee. The three occupants of the white pickup truck were transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center. A front-seat passenger in the blue pickup was injured and also was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center. A black Toyota pickup truck that was stopped near the entrance of Maui Raceway Park was hit by projectiles from the crash, but the driver was not injured. Hawaii law allows passengers to legally ride in the bed of a pickup if there are no available seats in the cab of the truck. Children 12 and under are prohibited from riding in pickup beds.
