We were not as in love with the interior though, which was smelly, noisy, and not particularly comfortable. For a few days of goofing off with friends at Cheap Truck Challenge it is no big deal having to reach inside the truck to open the door because the handle is broken, or having 2-inch sheetmetal screws above your head holding the wrong cab lights... But after a while these things start to nag and you find that you aren’t driving your truck as much as you might be if it were more comfortable. Call us soft, but we believe that a nice interior makes your truck more enjoyable on-road and off, particularly on trips like the Ultimate Adventure, where we are literally living out of our truck for a week or more. ’14 issue that a cage was the last major upgrade for our Ford (“Everybody Loves Raymond”). The tricky part is adding the security of a properly designed and built rollcage without actually making the interior less comfortable through errors like having bars that hit your head or knees or that don’t allow you access to the emergency... We headed to Nate’s Precision, Raymond’s official build shop, to have the crew build us a custom rollcage and fill our Ford with new door seals, flooring, and dash components from LMC. The first complaint often levied against my truck is that it doesn’t look like a cheap truck. Any kid would love to drive it. Look a little closer though and you find a series of leaks, poor steering geometry, and an engine that barely runs—but hey, nothing’s perfect. I went there to look at a set of Ford axles, but I ended up getting the axles and a complete truck as well for only $1,250. These generations of Fords have really good running gear and are cheap to purchase. My ’77 F-150 has a V-8 engine, NP435 transmission with a 6. 69:1 First gear, a gear-driven NP205 transfer case, a high-pinion Dana 44 front axle with disc brakes, and a big-bearing Ford 9-inch rear axle. My plan was to put used 33s under the fenders and a $30 mini spool in the rear and go win the Cheap Truck Challenge, but Fred Williams told me that was boring: “You need to think like a high school kid. ” Hmm…how would a high school kid think. A clearer head would have recognized that the four 411?2-inch Pit Bull Rocker radials cost more than my $2,013 modification budget—and I still had to get the truck running, fit the tires, and find wheels to mount them on. Some high school kids... They do usually have an abundance of time and energy though, so I started wheeling and dealing (literally) to get Pro Comp steel wheels and the rest of the parts I needed. In our case we learned a lot about what we like about our Ford, what we don’t like, and where we had to compromise. Don’t plan to fly under the radar if you speed, run red lights, or pick your nose while you are driving. Don’t plan to talk on the phone, text your buddies, or drink your latte either because driving a vehicle on 42s requires your full attention. Our Holley carburetor has an electric choke, which has been helpful to start the Ford when it is cold outside and let the truck warm up without our having to sit inside the cold cab. The only downside is that the truck does not have a functioning parking brake, so we either have to park against a curb or use a wheel chalk to warm up the truck in the morning.
