1972 Lincoln Mark IV: The Jalopnik Classic Review - Jalopnik

Forget all about Jimmy Fallon and that puddle of beige goo Lincoln has been calling cars of late. Let's go back to a time when Lincoln meant class. It meant "personal luxury" and all of the loud polyester tie, wide lapel wearing glory that entails. When you see the words "personal" and "luxury" used in the same sentence, a variety of things can come to mind. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that the Lincoln Continental Mark series cars were FoMoCo's premier personal luxury cars from the baroque lux-focused late-'60s all the way through Detroit's awful Malaise years. Even though the personal luxury car concept is patently ridiculous – a car that's neither sporty nor all that useful for anything other than transporting golf clubs and a brief case, and using a lot of gas in the process – they do have a certain... Aside from Rodney Dangerfield characters and the schlubs Lincoln used in its curious late-'60s ad campaign, plenty of 1972's classy gents were interested enough in the Lincoln Continental Mark IV Coupe to buy one new. The Mark IV – a refined (and then, when emissions controls were tightened in 1973, curtailed) version of the '69-'71 Mark III – was exactly what Ford's then-CEO Lee Iacocca wanted. He told me that when he bought the car 15 years ago, a '72 Lincoln Continental Mark IV was the farthest thing from his mind. Source: jalopnik.com

MT Classic Poll: 1957 Ford Ranchero or 1959 Chevrolet El Camino? - MotorTrend Magazine

"The Ranchero gives the room and 'personal' feel of a Thunderbird, the comfort of a sedan and the load-carrying capacity of a small pickup," said Motor Trend ’s Walt Woron after testing the new 1957 Ranchero in our April 1957 issue. During our recent comparison we concluded that “ The 1957 Ford Ranchero is a time machine that gives us a glimpse back at a uniquely optimistic and inventive era of American automobile styling. ” In our March 1959 issue, Motor Trend reviewed the El Camino: "Chevrolet's El Camino sports high styling of the passenger-car line, yet provides space for a 1030-pound load. It should prove a hot competitor to Ford's Ranchero during 1959. " After driving a mildly hot-rodded 1959 El Camino in our recent story, we said, “The El Camino is a sport/utility vehicle that a hot rodder can love without reservation. Though Ford still makes an el-Camino style truck in some countries, I liked the '57 from my youth. These cars were longer than today's downsized cars and because they were coupes, they had the "sportiness" today's boring kid haulers (sedans) don't have. Had the El Camino been a 1960, I would have picked it. I love the look of the 1960, but I've never liked the 1959. That's the ugliest face and most hideous taillights Chevrolet put on a car from 1946 to 1980. By default, I picked the 57 ford. Source: wot.motortrend.com

Thread of the Day: What Was Your First Car? - MotorTrend Magazine

My first car was a 1973 Chevy Nova hatchback. This was also the first car I ever got all 4 wheels off the ground. My father took me car shopping. it was EXACTLY the car I wanted. I still remember the day I first saw it. I knew I had to have it and I still do, 37 years later. My first car was and still is a 1970 Dodge Charger R/T-S/E It has the 440 Magnum with a six pak and factory A/C. The vinyl top still looks pristine. My wife and I dated in this car, brought my first child home from the hospital in it 27 years ago. I can't ever imagine selling it. My first car that I registered and actually drove legally on the road was a 1985 Plymouth Reliant K. It was an excellent car with good room decent speed and great gas mileage, except city driving. because in the city I got about 15-18 MPG but on the highway at 72 going through the hills on I81(Catskills up pass Syracuse) I got 32-35 MPG. My first NEW car was even better. Changed brakes, oil(super tech from walmart every 7,000 miles and super tech oil filter), spark plugs just champions basic, and an air filter(Fram).
