The three-time Formula 5000 champion shared the stage with 1969 F5000 champion Tony Adamowicz, Don Nichols, owner of the Shadow formula 5000 car, John Morton, Vern Schuppan, and Howden Ganley. “The main reason Formula 5000 came about was that it cost less than half the cost of a Formula One car,” Redman said. At Watkins Glen in the U. S. and Mosport in Canada, where the two types of cars raced in North America, there was less than a half a second between them. “Back in the 70’s there wasn’t much difference between what a Formula One driver and Formula 5000 driver could earn,” Redman said. For me, I was earning about $150,000 per year which was pretty good money in the 1970’s. That was just about as much as I could get in Formula One. His first Formula One drive was with Cooper in 1968. He finished third in his second race and crashed in the next outing at the Belgian Grand Prix. Redman thought it wasn’t until the 1980’s when Formula One salaries started to climb into the stratosphere. Driving sports cars for Ferrari in 1972, Redman discovered Ferrari doesn’t pay its drivers except in Formula One. “The first year Ferrari paid their sports car drivers was in 1972. Lexington man's '51 Ford featured on catalog cover - Jackson Sun

Larry “Red” Cagle said it was his lifelong dream to have a nice vehicle that he could be proud of. He said he has always loved trucks, and he has spent a lot of time with model cars. His 1951 Ford V8 Flathead truck was featured on the cover of LMC Trucks Catalog. Cagle said he had been working on the truck for decades before it was featured on the catalog. “I traded my 1970 Ford Maverick and a hundred dollar bill for the truck,” he said. Cagle said after a little work, he and a friend got the engine running. He said the Flathead motors were only manufactured for a short time between 1932 and 1953, and the parts are hard to come by. He took it to a garage in Lexington to have it checked out. Cagle said he drove the truck for years with the original motor. He said he switched it from a six volt system to a 12 volt system, and it started better. “The Flathead V8 was one of the best motors Ford ever made,” Cagle said. Cagle said he needed parts for it, but he did not know where to find them. He said he parked the truck for nearly 20 years before he became aware of LMC Truck Catalog. The 1958-1963 Formula Junior class and the sports and touring cars between 1940 and 1951 are exclusive to the Pre-Reunion weekend this year. “There was a time when the pre-reunion weekend was the overflow weekend for entrants who didn’t get their requests in on time or for the cars that didn’t quite fit requirements for their specific class,” said Barry Toekpe, Mazda Raceway Laguna... The Pre-Reunion now is simply an extension of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion itself. Part competition and part pageantry, the Reunion brings racing history to life as cars from nearly every era grace Mazda Raceway. The cars, selected for their historical significance, authenticity and correctness for the period, are divided into 15 classes, based on the type of car, displacement and era of origin.
